So we just had fibre installed last week into my house and the technician installed the new Nokia ONT. We thought awesome we can now get rid of our old router and just use this for everything!

As it turns out everything is disabled on it including wifi. Even when we connect to it directly on ethernet we still can't get internet.

Seems like its been configured to be totally locked down and just forward the internet connection onto the existing router.

Any clues on how we can reduce our cluttered router area?

The short and skinny of it is that it's a feature set offered to (or to be offered, I can't recall) RSPs, they pay Chorus a bit extra and Chorus activates the ONT's RGW features, so they RSP isn't providing any equipment, and saves initial costs. The only way for you to use those features is to sign on with an RSP who offers it, of which I'm not sure there are any at the moment, at least on a consumer level.

Correct. It is 'completely locked down' as it forms part of Chorus' network and is given to you purely as a layer 2 device.

I dont know why you would want to use it for wireless though. With a single antenna it's going to suck a fair bit compared to a decent wireless ap.

the wifi on it is nothing flash.

Chorus are going through the process of being allowed to enable it.

Your post is exactly what I expected a general customer to have.. It looks like a modem, must be a modem!

One sits on my desk. Anyone new that comes to see me always asks why i have a modem there.

Once i explain no its actually the new ont chorus are doing, I'm met with so many questions ranging from why would you even? to when can i get one?

Hope it wasn’t plonked behind the telly, aka WiFi shield, in the lounge, because that WiFi will be handicapped.

@hio77 How are these as a router? We were talking about them at work today.

hio77 How are these as a router? We were talking about them at work today.

have not tried, considering what you have described is the "ideal" placement per the codes, would not surprise.

I'm told they do PPPoE gbit perfectly fine. their wifi is only 2x2 so eh. it's not like it's a rocket.

Personally i see their best usecases being, low cost operators that just need the most basic of a setup.

Alternatively, applications like ATM's, cafes/businesses where they just need like their eftpos and terminal plugged in and maybe wifi for a phone...

In terms of a general consumer, i suppose the killer applications would be..

a. putting it in a room without blinding lights (i personally dont know how they are annoying, it's peaceful...)

b. Proving to naggity IT person who thinks their router that can only do 200mbit should be doing gbit because the box says gbit..

c. Driving people like me insane, when i see complaints of one light faults where the customer has turned leds off..

d. Kid entertainment device (they look great for pulling off walls right? ;) )

i think they are cool little boxes, really cute looking. I just still question if it's practical to position it as a CPE for the home.

I still seriously love the fact that plastered all over the bits is "Chorus Property do not remove". Here is hoping we see a reduction in people taking the Power Supply or even the ONT.. that's just a crappy experience for anyone.

As a provider there are so many different complications or considerations to look at.

oh and 1 voice port. What a nightmare that all is!.. currently anyway

Yes I realise the wifi is not going to be amazing but I'm only using the HG659 for wifi duties at the moment anyway. In the process of running ethernet and Powerline throughout the house so its not a big deal having slightly slow wifi.

It seems a bit silly we have a perfectly good router/wifi AP and yet we still need the HG659...but yeah sure I understand its a Chorus thing so its not as simple as just switching it on.

Will wait for when it does get enabled and hopefully can get rid of 1 piece of equipment and some extra cables.

The other folks are largely correct - Chorus is currently consulting with the industry on the use of wifi for all sorts of things. When this consultation is complete, we'll be forming up what RGW/Wifi products will look like.

I'm excited about getting this capability out there, but we have processes and consultation to follow to make sure we deliver what the RSPs want and will use.

For now, the wifi is disabled and the web GUI is locked down. I can appreciate that for alot of people dropping to a single device instead of ONT and separate RGW is appealing... particularly for those of us with ONT+Router+wifiAPs(or mesh)

You need to configure stuff on your computer before it works. It's not plug and play. This is standard procedure for any type of ONT.

Depending on your ISP, you will need to set VLAN and/or set a PPP dialer.

Try ONT Router Switch Access point.

If I can eliminate the router that'd be good. But will see how good the routing capability is on those ONT.
