Has anyone had any experience using this service in other countries? What are the download times like for one of the movies? And I am really hoping that the catalogue is expanded soon as very lean pickings at the moment!

the press release says their is over 700 movies:

Thanks for pointing this out.
There are some classic movies in there alright. As you say not too many just yet.
Some of them are over 1 gb per d/l.
Option to rent them as well

How does rent work? If you rent a movie, does it streams it from the online store until your rental period expires? Or you still have to download it but after the rental period expiry it automatically deletes it from itunes?

Rental price is very good for $6.99 for new releases but purchase price for new releases should be $19.99

just saw the prices. Pretty steep when you could rent a new realease for $8 at a movie store and copy it (not saying I do that)!

I'm guessing it's like Apple TV:

So... you probably get a decent amount downloaded before it can start playing, and it downloads the full movie in the background while you're still watching (otherwise it will continue to download).

Then it self destructs after the rental period.

Does anyone know if the movies are hosted on Akamai??

If they are, then I may be tempted to give it a go..

Xnet + Content on Akamai = Local (free) traffic + fast download speeds

As far as I know, yes, it is hosted on Akamai.

It will delete itself in 48 hours from first watching. There is no streaming.

From the press release:

iTunes movies in New Zealand start at NZ$9.99 for catalog title purchases, NZ$17.99 for recent releases and NZ$24.99 for new releases. iTunes Movie Rentals are NZ$4.99 for library title rentals and NZ$6.99 for new releases, and high definition versions are priced at just one dollar more. Movie rentals can be previewed, purchased and watched on iPod® classic, iPod nano with video, iPod touch, iPhone™ and on a widescreen TV with Apple TV.

I can't seem to find an HD movie yet, all are good sizes but I read on Arstechnica that we're looking at $1 extra for a movie in HD. And I think thats only for rentals. Either way this is good news, love or hate Apple/iPod, the fact its here can only be good.

It makes a good note however, movies are around 1gb to download (and there is an option to download in HD), guess we will all need MUCH bigger data caps if we're going to make use of this
