I'm thinking of changing ISP, but am not too sure who to.

I want to keep my phone and tolls with Telecom becuase I want to keep my OneBill phone connected. I dont make toll calls on this line (I use VoIP) but I think Telecom require you to keep you line and tolls to have a OneBill connected phone.

I looked at TCL, because I have heard good things, but unfortuantely they require you to have your homeline and tolls with them - stupid.

I have also heard that Xtra are about to remove the 128kb upload restriction from all of their limited plans (Good for VoIP) but what is their network like generally?

We usually use less than 10GB of data here, and I am happy to pay around $50/m give or take. But I also want the ability to 'buy' more data if I go over my cap.

What are your recommendations?

Telecom.

All the ISPs I can think of require you to have tolls with them, are rubbish, or the price exceeds your $50 budget (with or without tolls).

$50 is a soft budget. If it is worth it, I dont mind paying more

Quick look around at the NZ Connections plan comparison, ICONZ and Maxnet have plans which are OK, but still not as much value as the future Telecom broadband plans.

ICONZ ADSL 4 - M/128k - 10GB - $0.005/MB overage - $49.95

Maxnet DASH MX/128k - M/128k - 10GB - $10/2GB overage - $53.95

If you could allow to pay more, you'll really pay into the $60-70 range for Max upload.

Snap, Actrix and Maxnet

Snap is in Christchurch, and so all your data goes there first.

EDIT: as for ICONZ and Maxnet, I've read that ICONZ has a bad residential reputation.

This is only the case with the low end plans (I think that's all the 4Mbps plans now). You've always been able to have a "naked" TCL cable connection.

Yeah sorry should have been more clear. Unfortunatley I cannot get cable here as we are in a apartment building and wont install.

telecom. for $50 you get 10g and upwards of 9mbps/800kbps.

There is always Slingshot... $60 for 15GB at FS/FS and you don't need phone or tolls with them.
They also have free off-peek data between 1 - 7am.

They are rubbish and shape connections to ~30kBps during peak hours.

I would have to give my vote to Maxnet. I'm with them now, and the service I've had from them is just fantastic. About the longest I've ever been on hold with their helpdesk is about 5 minutes. I have friends that have been with them for years, and have had nothing but brilliant service, and great helpdesk support from them.

Sure, their plans ain't the cheapest around, but its worth it just for the great service you get from them.

I spoke to Xnet yesterday (Who I am with now) about an unrelated matter and they have advised me more international bandwitdth is a couple of weeks away. If this improves my experience I will probably stay as their charging model is good.

Otherwise I think Xtra will be a go.

I hope the other ISPs follow suit with their removal of upload speed restrictions.

Gotta be with Xnet. Great service. You can get around 15gb for $50 and buy more online for $1per gb.

As above, with Xnet ATM. Not getting anything done in the evenings due to speed factors discussed in other threads. Other than that, very very happy with Xnet. If they sort it soon as promised hopefully I wont need to change.

If not, Xtra is looking like a go.
