I'm trying to sort out a cheap broadband connection for a friend of mine that has a Telstraclear phoneline. It appears from their website that (because we are in Christchurch) he has to get cable broadband (which is more expensive than their PDQ plans for other parts of the country) and a bit of checking around seems to indicate that he can't use other ISP's because of his phoneline being with Telstraclear.

Is he really tied to one ISP because of his phoneline??

Yes. You can't use a TCL inhome phoneline for an ADSL connection.

I'm not sure why you think a phoneline + pdq plan is cheaper than a TCL inhome phone+cable modem package as they shouldn't be. What one are you looking at?

I was just basing that off the PDQ price at $26.95/month (256K down speed, 1Gb usage) and cable base pack of $34.95/month. And assuming that the homeline charge would be the same for both. Is that incorrect?

Yes TCL inhome homeline is around $9 cheaper per month.

If you look at the TCL site you will see that a TCL inhome package of 2Mbps down/up with 1GB data + phone costs $80.90 per month. If you weant PDQ you pay $44.49 for a phoneline and then $26.95 and get a 256kbps connection with 1GB data so you end up saving ~$1 and get a far superior product by getting a cable modem connection.

You also can't get PDQ if you are in a TCL on-network area anyway. If you want an ADSL solution you would have to move back to a Telecom line.
