I just noticed when I went for a walk before that there is a new cabnet on the ground just around the corner with telecom cover on the ground in front.
The telecom site says we're not due to be switched to a cabinet until July next year, are they likely running way ahead of schedule? or do they take a fair wihle to sort out all the copper pairs in it?

They have been putting cabinets around here for some months, but I'm only aware of a few cabinets that actually have anything in them. We have one round the corner from us - just went in a week or so ago. But as there is no fibre in the ground where I live I doubt there is anything in the cabinet yet. It's scheduled to be switched on in the new year.

You might find the following interesting - it's a cabinet in my area, but unfortunately not one I'm connected to! They spent a while setting it up

lols might find a troll or you could see the new green initiative 10000 mice in squirel cages turning a dynamo to power the cabinet and look its been marked for ownership by a tribe already in the top left corner

I'm in Mt Albert and recently been "cabinetised".  Think it did indeed take about 6 months from the cabinet first showing up till they cut my broadband across onto it.  Would be nice to think that they are ahead of schedule and it may very well be the case, but don't count your chickens!

Chorus is actually a bit ahead of the rollout schedule and there are some cabinets that are fully installed but cannot be cut over because the 'published dates' are not for a few more months - in some cases up to 5 months away.  it is a bit frustrating as a customer who would like to take advantage of the new technology now....

That doesn't sound right to me.

Why would Chorus/Telecom Wholesale not deliver early if they could?  Surely there are no penalties for doing so (as long as they have kept all the ISPs abreast of the likely timelines).  And let's face it, you know when you're ahead of schedule.  I would think that if the cabinet and the kit are all there, they will turn them on early.  They are not out to piss people off.

We live near Royal Oak, which is due to get a cabinet by July 2010.  But it looks as though they're about to start already, only about 500m from where we live!

Hopefully you are right!  The cabinets around Royal Oak are off three exchanges because Royal oak is at a sort of boundary between the exchange areas.  Each set of cabinets have different dates - Mount Eden is 2011, Three Kings is January - so very soon - and Onehunga which is July 2010, so it will depend on where you are closest to.

if you want an exact date try the mapping tool at this address:

Thanks.  No, it's not the Onehunga cabinet.  Can't really complain though, as we're getting 8 Mbps through Orcon LLU at the moment.  But looks like we'll only be a few hundred metres from the Onehunga cabinet. Tongue out

What are the implecations of being switched to a new cabinet early? in areas like Hamilton that don't have LLU yet I can't see it being a problem, apart from ISP's that customers use on each cabinet having to boost bandwidth to keep up with the higher connect speeds

You are right, the main impact on moving connections from the exchange to a cabinet is where LLU has already been deployed, as an LLU provider then can't service their customer anymore because the line is now off a cabinet and not the exchange.  This will be fixed however with sub-loop unbundling (or SLU). If there is no LLU at the exchange now or no immediate plan for it then there is no real impact on ISP's as their customer will get the benefits of cabinetisation with the move.  The delay in the cabinet cutovers has more to do with the published dates that the commerce commission have been given and any changes to those need an ok from them.
