I subscribe to ComCom media releases and thought people may be interested in this report on Fibre Max download speeds.

From the media release:
“Multiple factors were discovered during the investigation and the resulting network changes are helping to lift the performance of Fibre Max plans. Two retailers have already seen their average download speeds improve by 150-250 Mbps,”

So basically

- TCP round trip distance was causing speed tests in the south island to be lower than normal due to servers being on the north island

- LFC packet shapers which are typically very hard and strict were dropping packets.

I wasnt quite clear specifically what change the ISPs made?
Am assuming they started limiting customers to 999mbits so that they wouldnt hit the LFC 1gbit limit?

No, it was a lot more complicated that. There's a more detailed public document here.

Interesting to hear about that. A few weeks ago, I noted my measured speed had increased, but checking it again, it has come all the way up to the gig mark.

The little white box would usually measure NZ traffic around the 500mbit, suprisingly aussie would get to gig speeds on the white box!  Nice to see this has 'come right'.

"Note: RSP X have requested details of the changes made to their network be redacted from the report and as
such these changes are not described in detail here."

Thats unhelpful :-(

My speeds have also increased for 530ish to into the 800's too, happy days :)

I've not checked my transmission errors but hopefully they may have disappeared as well.

I think it really shows that if the internet works "well enough" the vast majority of people don't notice or care that it isn't going full speed.

And that even applies when the international connection has a lot of packet loss.

If you don't know any better why would you complain, especially if you have moved from ADSL.
