Hi all,

Unforunately my T-Stick got nicked, so am looking for a replacement, and noticed that the new Vodem is out.

First off, i've checked out the prices of the plans on both networks, and i'm happy with either so that's not a consideration for me.
Equally, i consider T+V to be as bad as each other customer service wise, so that isn't a consideration either.

I hear that the new Vodem has better coverage than the old one. I spend almost all of my time in Central Wellington, and a little in Kapiti and got 3G coverage almost all the time with the T-Stick, so as long as the Vodem coverage is at least equal i'm happy.

Which leaves speed. Which performs better? I understand the new vodem supports 7.2 HSDPA, but is that even being used yet? Even if not, i'm gonna be on this plan for ~2 years so it may be worth it for the future support.

Thanks,

Peter

Voda 3G in Kapiti is poor if non existant, might want to keep that in mind.

There is also 900MHz 3G, so someone with a Nokia 6121 (or other 900 3G device), or johnr may be able to confirm how well Kapiti is covered. Unless you've been able to confirm this too Cyril?

Pity the Voda coverage site does not keep upto date. But I can confirm that other than some coverage near the SH1 in Paraparaumu itself 2100 coverage is scarce, my 3G phone is not W-CDMA at 900MHz capable so cannot comment there.

Hi, thanks for that john, but no 900mhz ones I hope, well out of band. Which sites, I presume the waikanae one (Omahi St) is either not 3G at all or only 900MHz.

Cyril was making a joke about 900mHz (millihertz) vs. 900MHz (megahertz).

Back on topic slightly, the NZ Broadband Map http://www.broadbandmap.govt.nz/map/ has started to become more useful (despite my initial doubt and negativity on it).  It now shows Vodafone 3G coverage including the Kapiti area.  The granularity isn't particularly high for all areas although it's quite good for the major cities.

Forest Heights has had dodgy 900 GSM coverage since the day the site was built ~1995. Huge numbers of bitrate errors on one of the sectors. Lets hope they've enabled 900 WCDMA and fixed up the dodgy GSM at the same time!
