I'm moving to a rural property (in Welcome Bay) soon and am trying to figure out my broadband options. I recon we need at least 600gb a month and want a reasonable speed since we watch nextflix etc and have a youtube/roblox/whatever addicted teenager.  The options I've looked at are:

1) Wired broadband. The Chorus broadband checker says I can get ADSL with an estimated 7mbs download speed (VDSL/fibre aren't available). Someone I spoke to at spark said they thought it would probably be less than 7mb - wish I could find out what I could really get. IF its 7mb its pretty crap but is probably functional for basic surfing. It'll be useless for netflix etc tho.

2) Wireless broadband. I've looked at Spark(Skinny)/Vodafone/2 Degrees and the only one I can sign up to is 2 degrees (capped at 300gb for $65), the others say they don't have sufficient capacity in my area, and/or cap usage at a useless level and/or want stupid prices for 600gb.

3) Dedicated local networks. None available in my area that'll give the speed & capacity I want.

4) Starlink. Later this year supposedly. Doesn't help me now and given the big trees around my new house I'm not convinced it'll be great anyway.

So.... Have I missed any options?

The best option I can think of is bridging two x 2 Degrees wireless connections (which I think is feasable), or bridging one 2 Degrees wireless plus ADSL (ideally somehow making the ADSL do the work, then topping up with the wireless when faster speeds are needed - is this setup even possible)?

I just don't know enough about this stuff - any help greatfully received please.

NGPOA or whatever they are calling it now may be an option. Just don't expect it to be cheap.

Welcome to the rural world!

WISP's seem to do large data at better prices than the mobile broadband solutions, if you can find one operating in your area. It's always a shock for urban people to learn what we pay for our internet!

So in your experience does bridging 2 x wireless broadband connections (for example) not give enough speed/reliability for netflix etc? Or are you just guessing?

I'm sure there's enough people out there who've been in similar situations. Maybe they have ideas that neither of us considered.

Sorry, whats NGPOA?

I'm resigned to it not being cheap, but would prefer to not have my wallet totally emptied each month!

Yup agreed. Just no luck in finding one that covers my property (correct me if I'm wrong, but I think a direct line of sight is usually essential?)

@Pat2020 get your teenager in to surfing and you won’t need high speed internet. Tauranga is a wonderful place for the outdoors.

If you want to get a good idea of what your adsl speeds will really be, use the Chorus website. If you enter some of your neighbours addresses, you should be able to find some with an active dsl connection, and it will tell you exactly what speed they get.

This being said, a Netflix HD stream is 5mbps, 4K is 15. 7 might struggle with two streams at once. It would work - Netflix’s scaling is pretty flawless - but the quality will suffer.

Would the budget allow for two adsl lines? You could dedicate one to your teenager and one to yourselves.

Good call. One of the neighbours has ADSL @ 7mbs so I guess that confirms it.

I could get two ADSL lines, but using them separately would just give me two pretty poor connections. If bridging/load balancing is possible (e.g.using a TP link tl-r480t+) I could get 14mbs and prioritise some (my) devices?

Any experience with bridging/load balancing anyone?

I have done load balancing with Draytek routers. There are a few quirks as it's not true load balancing, i.e. your traffic will span two different IPs. But there are ways to make it work.

Rural Fibre / non UFB subsidised fibre.. I think NGPOA stands for "Next Gen Price On Application" or something along those lines.

Cost could be anything from a couple of grand to 150k+

That isn't quite how it works as your connection will have separate IP addresses and it is also highly likely one line will perform better than the other. Furthermore to add salt to the wound your upload won't be great either as maxing the upload on one of the connections (which a client will do) will saturate that connection. It just isn't a great solution to your problem.

Have you actually asked a wireless ISP if they can do something for you? I believe @myfullflavour covers your neck of the woods.
