Measurement Lab was announced as a partnership between the New America Foundation's Open Technology Institute, the PlanetLab Consortium, Google Inc. and academic researchers. It offers tools for consumers and researchers.

"Measurement Lab (M-Lab) is an open, distributed server platform for researchers to deploy Internet measurement tools. The goal of M-Lab is to advance network research and empower the public with useful information about their broadband connections. By enhancing Internet transparency, M-Lab helps sustain a healthy, innovative Internet."

You can check their network tools now (Java required):

"Network Diagnostic Tool (NDT) provides a sophisticated speed and diagnostic test. An NDT test reports more than just the upload and download speeds -- it also attempts to determine what, if any, problems limited these speeds, differentiating between computer configuration and network infrastructure problems. While the diagnostic messages are most useful for expert users, they can also help novice users by allowing them to provide detailed trouble reports to their network administrator."

"Glasnost attempts to detect whether your Internet access provider is performing application-specific traffic shaping. Currently, you can test if your ISP is throttling or blocking BitTorrent. Tests for other applications will follow soon."

"NPAD diagnoses some of the common problems effecting the last network mile and end-users' systems. These are the most common causes of all performance problems on wide area network paths."

All very useful...

None of the tools on that site worked for me.

"Glasnost" said that the server was overloaded, the "Network Diagnostic Check" said that the server was down, NPAD seems to use the same server as the Diagnostic Check one, and the other two haven't been released yet...

They got a lot of publicity today - blogs, slashdot, mainstream media.

But what to expect? Google is behind it so it is probably something running with a "BETA" tag meaning "hey if it doesn't work, too bad, it's beta" like many of their "products". It annoys me that they get away with that.

The whole reason for this "release" seems to be to show legislators in the U.S. how many people are annoyed with ISPs blocking and shaping services - all in their own little fight for the "network neutrality", which comes from some ISPs wanting to give preferencial service to packets travelling to and from servers from companies that pay them, slowing the other services.

Again, consumer is just a little detail...

I got Glasnost to work yesterday (fortunately) and as expected no BitTorrent altering ways have been found on my connection.

The others were so overloaded I couldn't even reach them.

NDT and Glasnost would really be popular here.

As soon as I read that Google was involved, the first thing I thought of was "Google reliability" (meaning that everything was hosted in one of Google's datacenters, and therefore almost zero server-is-down downtime.)

As soon as I went to the page, I realised that I was greatly mistaken. Foot in mouth

An update spotted on Google blog today:

Suddenly, it's taking forever to reach your bank's website. What’s going on? How do you know whether it's a problem with your device, with the service you're trying to access, with the network, or with something else? The answer for a long time was: you don’t.

Measurement Lab (M-Lab) is trying to change that. M-Lab hosts open source tools that consumers access to measure broadband health and performance. Each test run gives consumers real-time information about their connection. And while they help consumers, they also collect rich data for researchers -- over 400 terabytes, available in the public domain, comprising a treasure trove that allows scientists to do deep analysis of the state of broadband networks.

Now, all of this is available in New Zealand. John Hine, Dean of Engineering at Victoria University of Wellington, understood the need for better data broadband data for researchers and consumers. He and his colleagues, working with local Google engineers, helped set up M-Lab servers in Wellington. With servers close enough to ensure accurate results, New Zealanders can now reliably access and run M-Lab's tests, and New Zealand's research community can dig into robust data about local broadband performance and make data-based suggestions on how to improve broadband performance.

Check out the M-Lab tools and see for yourself.
