Hi All.

I live in a house with 3 phone lines.

Line 1: Has phone and internet on it (may or may not have alarm connected, not sure, we bought the house recently and don't use the alarm). Jack points all over the house (2 story). One phone connected, using filter (have tried lots of different ones)

Line 2: Nothing connected. But has broadband sync (but not tunneled to any isp, ie can't login) - I guess the port is still connected, but we can't use it. Only rooms on lower story have jackpoints. Sync speeds 4mbit down, 850k up

Line 3: Nothing connected. Again, has broadband sync (but not using it). Only 1 jackpoint in the Garage. Sync 4.1mbit down, 900k up.

We live quite far from the exchange (Northcote point in Birkenhead, cabinet is planned for 2010 afaik), which is why 4.1mbit is ok.

OK, so now you know a bit about the wiring.

Now our line 1 is SCREWED (this is the line that runs all over the house), we have a tonn of jackpoints for it (but don't use any).
These are the line stats, when we connect from the best jackpoint.

Statistics
Downstream
Upstream

Line Rate

1536 Kbps (down)
704 Kbps (up)

Attainable Line Rate

1696 Kbps (d)
896 Kbps (u)

Noise Margin

15.0 dB (d)
16.0 dB (u)

Line Attenuation

51.0 dB (d)
30.0 dB (u)

Output Power

16.2 dBm (d)
12.1 dBm (u)

with some of the other jack points I get sync speeds of 250Kbps OR LESS! (download).
So the internal wiring is SCREWED for line 1, but ok for the others.

Now my question is - if we get a dedicated adsl jack point installed for line1, is it going to 'fix' the broadband on line1 and give us sync speeds similar to lines 2/3 ? Or will it just improve the situation slightly, if at all?

I want to know so I don't shell out $200 for nothing.

Thanks a lot for your help.

please let me know if you need any more info.

PS: Changing everything to another line is not really feasible due to how the jackpoints are laid out.

Hi, in the fist case could you get the line stats for one of the lines that gives you 4.1Mb/s.

Once you start getting attenuations like you have then a central filter is a must. And if there are lots of phone jacks then you can be sure there will be issues caused by all the stubs they create.

If there is an alarm and of recent install (ie <10yrs) then you can bet its across the line, but do you know which, I presume line1. If so then it would be very wise to have a central filter installed to bypass it.

cool thanks for that, I guess we'll go for a central splitter then.

Just wanted to make sure it would help, and that our line wasn't a lost cause. haha.

If you still get the chance to check the line stats of the other lines in particular the attenuation would be good.
