I had initially included a long pre-amble here but realized I may be breaching an unwritten forum rule - "Thou shall not go on and on." - so I moved that part it to "Off Topic"

I've been looking through the forums and I can't see it explained anywhere.

Why do some people get download speeds of 10Mb/s or greater (74Mb/s at Victoria Uni). My speedtest.net never exceeds 3Mb/s with 50 to 100 ms ping. I'm in Ellerslie, Ak have unlimited Go large (or whatever its evil (Expensive Vindictive ISP League) offspring is nowadays).

So

1. how do they get lightning fast speedtest.net graphics on their posts. Is it that they have a big fat stormwater sized pipe directly into the basement of Xtra next door to them or is it photoshop. I want it to be the big fat stormwater sized pipe - at least then someone is gettin them some!

2. how do they get the speedtest.net graphics on their posts. I tried "copy forum link" and just get this string/link/address thing (If it displays correctly once I post - ignore this Q2 as I've answered another of my own inane obvious questions).

simply put, they have bigger pipes. universities and companies are often connected via 100Mbit or 1000Mbit connections over fibre optic cables. this means faster throughput than x-dsl (e.g. 100-1000Mbps instead of 1-20Mbps) and much lower latency (e.g. 1ms instead of 60ms for local speedtest server pings)

When you make a full post simply use that little picture icon to insert a direct url. Let the forum handle the html tags.

I'm in Ellerslie too and here's the speeds I get. Do you have an ADSL 2+ modem?

Regs - thanks for explaining that - thought it may be something like that - I'm glad its not photoshoped. Envious but :-)

MackinNZ - I asked about that and I was told by the telecom guy who sold be the upgrade (ie you pay us $10 more for exactly the same service) last month from Go-Large to BigTime that I didn't need to change my modem from the one they gave me several years ago free with Go-Large plan - that all the speed changes were at their end. I haven't read into ADSL 2+ at all so not sure if thats correct or not.

Just checked my modem its a DLink DSL-302G ...with ADSL written on the side!

Do I need a ADSL 2+ modem after all?

Edit: I wonder if the horrendous audible noise on the main extension is an issue. We've had to disconnect any phones from that extension - it seamed to happen a bit after we changed plans - I've been hopping to get around to fault finding it to sort out if its the extension, the cordless phone, wifi or something else - its not 100% reoccurring or consistent.

To the best of my knowledge the DSL-302G is only ADSL and does not support ADSL/2+.

So to answer your question, you would need an ADSL/2+ modem to achieve higher speeds (subject of course to your connection etc)

That's correct. The 302G is not an ADSL2+ device, you'll need to upgrade. Sound's like you need to sort out the line noise issue as well.

With an ADSL2+ modem you should experience much faster speeds.

Mark, purhaps you could post the DSL stats page from your modem. Once you start talking about noises and changing extentions effecting this and that then you should concider if you house wiring is up to any good.

Have you done an isolation test, this involves disconnecting all the phones/fax/skybox from every socket in the house so only the modem is across the line. Ideally if you can post the DSL line stats both now and then when you do an isolation test is good. The details of interest are atttenuation, Signal to noise and sync rate.

Cyril - Thanks I'll try that isolation test this weekend.

I'll search the forums to find how to get hold of the DSL stats page from my modem - its either the ADSL settings sheet telecom sent with the modem or maybe I access the modem directly via a IP address like my storage router- I'll have to look for those.
