I dont keep up with mobile devices/plans etc much so if my question seems noobish, then you know why ;)

I have access to Vodems/XT sticks etc for mobile broadband - Im wanting to borrow one to take on holiday around the country (Anyone in Whitianga get coverage ? :) ) with me next month, but dont want to be using the owners account/allowance. (They belong to my employer)

Whats the cheapest and easiest way of getting a new SIM with prepay data on it ? Keep in mind its only for a month, so I dont want to get stuck in anything thats going to keep costing me or a large outlay to start with.

Can I just use my personal 2D phone SIM in one of the devices and have the amount taken off my account ? (I know 2D isnt the cheapest for data but its only for the occasional email check/blog update etc) \
Any issues with using 2D on a Vodem ? (I see a post elsehwre on GZ with someone asking but no definite answer)

i think the best option is to put in a Vodafone Prepay Sim, and purchase a $10 BBLite addon (100MB traffic) it only lasts for a month and would be perfect i think for your situation.
2D would be good also, but they don't do Data packages at all.. a major let down.

Means Id have to purchase a Supaprepay SIM which is a cost Im trying to avoid really :-p

I may have to cosy up to the boss and see if I can "have" a 100mb on one of the company devices ;)

well really depends on how much you will be using.

As a one-off comparison:

a Voda or XT prepay sim is going to set you back $30, plus $10-12 for the credit required for a 100/120 MB add on.
So that is around $40 for 100MB.

100MB on 2D is going to cost you $50 (50c/MB) including the SIM so the difference is not major, and if you use less than 80MB then 2D is cheaper

Of course, 2D is only 2G and presumably XT and Voda both have 3G coverage where you are going (you should check that first though) so your speeds ought to be much better of voda or XT than on 2D.
2G is slow. painfully slow.
