It doesn't look like Verizon provides the best FTTH experience - seriously, do you need fiber to get an average 13Mbps? Also note the price increases.

Just to start the discussion really, and to show fiber is not the solution - there are lots of other factors involved...

Would be interesting to know what contention ratios Verizon build/provision their backhaul and core network at for residential users.

You might be better off looking and Europe and Asia rather than the US for innovation/execution for FFTH.

UK should be interesting once they get going as regulation there requires connection ratios to be published.

interesting results that person was having. his node could be oversold - would be more interesting if he gathered data from other people in his area an then provide that to verizon

From what i've heard from friends in the US, their DSL there is still ADSL1, thus limited to 8mbit and that the ISPs sell on speed, ie, 1mbit or 2mbit, etc.. We get FS/FS, etc here..
On off peak, I get easily do 12-14mbit/s..

I wish this was the same in New Zealand. I can't help but feel fleeced and lied too not knowing if my ISP is provisioning 100 or 1000 users on a single 10Mbit/s backhaul link.

It would also be good to know the average international bandwidth per customer on international uplinks. If every ISP published this data consumers would be able to make much more informed decisions on the quality vs, price of the broadband they are purchasing.

I believe that USA providers normally do not throttle heavy users, allowing a few users to abuse the shared traffic.

Time to find a new industry!
