i am just wondering if anyone can tell me how, for 3 minutes this afternoon i was able to get a download speed of 2500 kbs on a download, when i have  just asdl and i live 5km from the exchange, the cabinet isnt due to be upgraded until Dec , i just would like to know how it is possible to get that speed when 400kbs has been the limit up to now.





Common sense is not as common as you think.

I'm guessing the download actually started before it started to track how much it had downloaded, thereby making it think it had downloaded the same amount of less time. It's not all too uncommon, but usually only lasts a few seconds with download managers.

I have noticed that on some major corporations websites which offer downloads, they are unusually fast.
This may be due to the fact that they usually have had a server installed/rented/CDN in NZ to cache the files
eg. Akamai, etc.

Try to download something from your ISP's website or hosted content. That will give you an idea of your actual line rate.

Presume you already have a splitter installed... That sometimes gives better performance. Also your ISP can check if its on a long reach profile, which may sacrifice a bit of the upstream to improve downstream speeds.




Time to find a new industry!
