I have noticed my broadband speed varies during downloads, every 10 or 20 seconds it seems to drop to around 100kb/s then speeds up to around 1.2Mb/s then back down. It happens on different sites and it seems a very steady up and down

It's not a major just seems unusual and would like to hold the download at full speed if poss :-)

First thing to try is to plug in directly and see if that helps. You might be getting large bursts of radio interference.

If that doesn't help, rebooting your router (and checking it has the latest firmware) would be the next things I'd do. Then try with a different laptop, or the same laptop but using a Linux boot CD (to try and rule out a Windows issue - unlikely I know)

Then contact your ISP.

When I test the speed on speedtest.net it seems to be very stable although the download test doesn't last very long

What do you get downloading from a local NZ mirror?
And what about connecting directly as I suggested above, are you able to do that?

Think of your ADSL connection to your ISP as an on-ramp to a motorway. Getting from A to B is a fast local short distance trip but getting from A to C is a long trip more congestion and traffic.

Replace:
- A with your home
- B with a site or service hosted in NZ
- C with a site of service hosted overseas
