great...i signed up with ihug...the power plan 30 gb 3.5/512 got a e-mail from ihug yesterday that my account is activated...tried a speed test yesterday and i was still getting my old 2mb speed(2mb account with ihug previously)...so rang ihug yesterday and guy said wait for 24hrs as telecom might not have activated the 3.5/512 from their computers....my router was already showing a down stream of 4288 and upstream of 609....

so today i rebooted my router several times and still the same old 2mb speeds...rang ihug...who in turn rang telecom while i was on hold with ihug...the telecom guy told him that my house (new subdidvision houses in hamilton) is 3.5km from exchange and telecom is using a compent node to connect to my phone line which then connects to the exchange...so i cannot recieve 3.5/512...

i mean when i was on 2mb...i was getting 1.9-1.7mbps speed tests regulalry....the compentnode didnt slow me down then...so why is it slowing me down now? any one else had that same problem

i have to get my $80 plan cancelled and go for $60 with ihug which offers me 3.5mbps/128 30gb and yet still i will only get 2mbps/128 speeds...

they wont give me back my 2mb/128 20 gb $50/month back anymore as they said you cant change back to 2mb any more...

complete bs...waist of my time....so much for the faster internet arrival in nz....

mmmmm this does not bode well. I to received a "your account has been activated" email and my speed has not changed.

I did however only get the email late this afternoon so I'll wait and see what has happen by the end of tomorrow.

Bummer we cant go back to the old 2mb plans if it doesnt work! I ended up paying $10 more so my peak cap wouldnt drop!

I'll report back on how it goes.

well it has alredy been well over 24hrs for me since i got the e-mail day before yesteday..but report back..see if its the same problem with you....

The line speed should be more than enough to give you 3.5M/512k... what's a "compent node"?

Telecom has had provisioning and network problems over the last week which has led to pretty crap performance on all the DSL network apparently, but I don't see why you shouldn't get 3.5M/512k once that's fixed - unless Telecom doesn't have enough backhaul from the exchange or cabinet you're connecting to?

I was on the 256kbps service , and have made the move to 3.5Mbps.

My service was changed on Friday morning and I thought "GREAT!", let's try out a few speed tests. Well, I've done several tests so far this weekend, and my average is about 2.1Mbps.

I'll be ringing my ISP on Monday to say that I won't be paying for a service that doesn't come close to what I'm meant to be getting, that this is totally unacceptable as I only live about 0.5km from my local exchange!!!

Isn't it just a 'config file' of some kind that restricts your speed?

Working out where the bottleneck is would be useful though... for instance, if you're on the 3.5M/128k plan, it could well be that your upstream gets saturated with TCP acknowledgement packets. If that happens, your downstream will choke too.

Having said that, I'm hearing from an increasing number of people on the 3.5M/512k plan that performance isn't anywhere near the nominal.

From the Orcon help page:

"Due to some design issues on Telecoms end the current maximum achieveable speed on a 2M connection is closer to 1.5M."

Which begs the question: The faster the connection, the greater the degradation?!?

Im was on 2Mbit getting 1.9Mbit.

I think I must have changed to 3.5Mbit overnight, because I am now getting consistent 2080Kbps which should be impossible on a 2Mbit plan.

Sure doesnt equal 3.5Mbps though does it.

No... I have heard that in some areas, Telecom's backhaul is either overloaded or underdimensioned (2M carrier!) so that could be why.

Always got the promised speed on my 2M/192k Xtra connection here on Auckland's North Shore though, and when I was on full-rate Jet$tream, it would hit download/upload speeds close to the line ones (and empty my bank account at an equally fast rate, sigh). With any luck, I'll be switched over to the 3.5M/512k plan next week... are there any Xtra customers in here on that?

We're lucky we're not in America - somebody would have already started a class action claiming that not only is their internet not cheaper it's also not faster either!

Over the while i was getting 1.99Mbits a second. I've upgraded now and getting an average of 3.1Mbps on a crappy line a long way from the exchange. 3.5 would be nice but i doubt i'll get that

Im an xtra customer, i couldnt be bothered waiting for the upgrade so i switched my plan Thurs night, it was all sorted on friday morning

I know a few people who have had reasonable speed (near 2.1mbps) before the 3.5mbps plan upgrade... however now barely get above 256kilobits per second.

If I was them, I would defintely not pay for a 3.5mbps connection when I'm not getting anywhere near it (and it isn't my line or modems problem). Its either Telecoms or the ISP's problem.

Same deal from me!!! I was on the $55, 1Mbps Actrix, 700mb/day plan... And as the usual Actrix practice, I normally get about 0.7Mbps, when it's not really during the peak time.. Speed varies from 0.4-0.9Mbps....

But now that they have "free upgraded" me, since I think they're cutting all the 1Mbps UBS plans across the board for ISPs, I'm only getting an average of 0.4Mbps.... Speed varies from 0.3-1.4Mbps.....

Maybe we SHOULD start a class action.... Cheaper, faster? No way.. It was not cheaper, neither issit faster. It's "slower, smaller data cap internet from april"....
