A friend of mine has asked my advice about sharing Woosh over WiFi. Normally the modem is connected directly to his PC, but when his kids come over with smartphones, netbooks and Nintendo DS he'd like them to be able to use WiFi. My thoughts were:
1. Buy a WiFi card / USB dongle for his PC and use Connectify to share over WiFi (yes, he's using Win7).
2. Buy a WiFi router and plug the Woosh modem into it directly.

Is the second option possible? It's been years since I used Woosh, but I remember a piece of software on the PC that used your username and password.
For the first option, what WiFi device would give the maximum distance / wall penetration?

last time i use woosh was in 2007. i asked them about this and they gave me a special router where you can plug in the woosh pcmcia card onto it for free.

i remembered helping out my friend to setup woosh modem to a netgear router (but you will need ethernet cable and usb to ethernet). i did this prob way back in 05/06. to answer your second question, yes it is possible but only with certain routers.

edit: you definitely can share it with any router that support pppoe. however you need to buy the usb to ethernet cable. have a look at this faq HERE

woosh provide all the hardware to do this. I am using the gateway they provide with a netgear router they also provide and it is quick and easy. You could try and set up a router to use PPPoe and just plug in the modem to the router. Alternatively, buying a wireless card or laptop and sharing through the wireless connection could work.

Sorry, I couldnt work out how to edit my previous post, so here is the edit.

*Edit* hard and difficult, I just remembered what a pig it was and the instructions sucked.
It has not stopped working for the last month though.
The instructions from the woosh booklet are:
Only have router connected to computer by cable or wireless.
Choose PPPoE connection for the router. (It took some fiddling to find this when I set this up)
Type username and password into appropriate boxes.
If you need a service name put in woosh.co.nz
Connection to always on.
Change IP address to 192.168.1.99
Untick use router as DHCP server
connect woosh PPPoE cable to one of the LAN ports (Not Wan as I learned the hard way)
Set up wireless security.

I dont see that you will need the voip gateway from woosh if you want to use the modem directly to the router.

Thanks for the information. I thought it might be a case of "possible but difficult", which is why I was considering the Connectify option.

yeah, if it is just short term, connectify or internet connection sharing through windows wireless settings may well be the way to go, but if it is for long term, it is probably worth playing around with a wireless router because he will never need to worry about the computer being on/asleep/hibernating when the kids want to connect.

It is easy to do using a WiFi Router connecting to the Modem using PPPoE.

If you don't already have a router, then we recommend and sell this one http://www.netgear.com/home/products/wirelessrouters/simplesharing/WNR1000.aspx for this purpose.

If you already have a WiFi router, then it needs to have a RJ45 WAN port to plug the Modem's PPPoE cable in to. Note that some ADSL Modems won't have an RJ45 WAN port.
