I think it's time to get rid of my D-Link 302G and get faster speeds.

Preferably, I want one of those bang for buck modems.

Maybe a Dynalink RTA1320?

...

Suggestions anyone?

Hi the Dynalinks are ok, even the lattest ones still suffer from heating issues, but they have the right chipset which is a positive. I would recommend a TPlink the TD-8840 which is around $70 uses the right chipset for Telecom DSLAMs and work very well.

Do you know if the TPlink wireless routers with ADSL2+ built in also carry the same chipset, such as the TD-W8950ND or TD-W8960N?

Heard TP-Link was good but using Linksys WRT54GL as the router - so just looking to upgrade the modem only.

If you are purely looking at replacing the dsl modem another option would be the Draytek Vigor 120.

I have been using one of these for a couple of months and have found it to be quite good. I have it set up in PPoA passthrough mode so that my router connects using PPoE authentication. With this setup the Vigor purely supplies the dsl connection and nothing else which saves concerns about double NAT et al.

Could be worth a look with your setup.

I can second the Vigor 120 recommendation. I have been running one with a pfSense box as my router and this has been brilliant for several months.

Zyxel Modems/Routers are hard to beat. They are incredibly reliable (We have had ONE in warranty fault in 11 years of supplying them. They are stable and fast and have local support. They are relatively expensive by comparison to Dlink and Dynalink....

Hi, the TP-Link can be operated in half bridge which is the mode needed to deal with PPPoA as a modem only, but the draytek PPPoA>PPPoE bridge is probably cleaner but at some cost.

Quite honestly unless there is some exclusive feature that DD-WRT provides then use the stock NAT router of the TP-Link, small routers have come a long way in the last few years so unless there is some odd feature you need from DD-WRT the standard NAT router firmware of most routers is all you need. these days even your most basic DSL modem/router can deal with Wan to LAN traffic at ethernet line speed, so a 18Mb/s DSL line will not stress it, and most have now been sorted to deal with hundreds of torrent connections so again compared to modems of 3-5yrs ago they are not in the same league.

Telecom supplied 2wire is their business brand modem, but only works on the telecom network.

Mine has never crashed, and you can pick them up on trademe pretty cheaply. Ignore the silly twits who try and sell above $70.

Negatives: only wireless G, and no gig lan ports.

Draytek Vigor 120 does full pppoa to pppoe bridging but it costs 2x more than a basic adsl modem that does pppoa half bridge. For home use it's not worth it imo.

Here's the short list for modems that do pppoa half bridge:

TP Link TD8840
Linksys AM300
Dynalink RTA1320E
NetComm NB6Plus4

I would go with the TP Link TD8440 it's the cheapest and they are pretty much all using the same or similar broadcom components for the modem chipset (except AM300 which is using TI).

Generally, yes. I guess it's theoretically possible that some ADSL2+ modems dont support G.DMT but i've never seen one.

Just went and bought one of these and connected it last night. Not much in the way of configuration required and got it up and running in about 5 miinutes flat.

Looking forward to the Wi-fi N being more stable than my Linksys WAG160N. Actually the WAG160N has great Wi-Fi range, but I'm completely over the well documented AP Isolation issues which have existed since day one and multiple firmware upgrades.
