If anyone saw the news on One last night you might have noticed ihug CEO, Mark Rushworth, explaining how easy it was going to be to 'plug' their equipment into the Telecom network.

Mr Rushworth was holding a DSL router which he called a DSLAM and then proceeded to explain that it was a simple case of attaching it to some wires that were running down the wall of the ihug server room.

Seriously, the guy lacks credibility. I laughed so much I nearly cried!

Staff training can't have been a big thing at Telecom considering he spent 6 years there! :-)

Did you work with him when he was with telecom mobile?

 (Checks MySky):

Looks like a DSLAM

Hmm, sure looks like a DSLAM to me, one of the Ericsson EDA modules if I'm not mistaken.

Ok, Jama... The jury is out now. Be brave and confirm or deny this?

Come on, from what I understand, Mark is a professional engineer by trade, so he *should* know what a DSLAM is.

Ok I admit it. I caught sight of it briefly and it looked like an old DSE DSL router I used to have. I didn't record the segment, pause, zoom in and examine the image in great detail.

Ok I will fall on the PDA.

Still, he was plugging it into the wrong place and his represenation of how this all works was a bit simplistic.

Sooo.. speaking of acronyms.

What do you accept DSLAM to mean?
The DSL part everyone agrees on. But the AM part seems to have a few definitions.

I accepted it as Access Module. However acronymfinder links to a few other entires.
http://www.acronymattic.com/results.aspx?q=dslam

AcronymMeaningRank
DSLAMDigital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexor****
DSLAMDigital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexers***
DSLAMDigital Subscriber Line Access Module***
DSLAMDigital Subscriber Loop Access Multiplexers***
DSLAMDigital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexes*

What's your take?  Apparently Access Module isn't the highest ranked.. ?

PS: Slightly off topic, but we were talking about what a DSLAM was. ;p

Splicing the twisted netwoking pairs and hooking them into the MDF,  or plugging in the mobile phone RF cables

How about hooking it up to a SkyDigital dish and trying to reposition the satellite? I'm sure that will work. with luck we might get free DirecTV.
