Went live today as the tech said it would.

Only getting 14meg downstream, odd thing is that yesterday the downstream power was a lot higher than it is now.

SO anyway, is the limitation to 0dB something that they do just temporarily because there may still be customers of idiot ISPs that sold unbundled in the area so to not affect them, or is the reduction in power a permanant thing?

at 600m away I would have expected much more of an improvement. And my pings have gone up aswell.

thats 14 with me tweeking the SNR, without the tweek its closer to 10.

Your modem says max 17megs, but you have to realise that ADSL2+ will adjust its speed to the noise margin for a stable signal. If you want to make it more stable then start looking at your house wiring, get a master filter wired in. If you already have, there maybe wiring issues in the street that limit whats available without creating excessive crosstalk for everyone else.

Time to find a new industry!

There is no internal wiring, it is naked dsl with a single jackpoint that was installed on a new aerial cable to the pole not many years back. It was swapped out for a fancy new 2c one when I last had issues with the line (just before moving to slingshot) but that was later found to be water in the old box up the pole which they replaced.

That max speed is with me setting the target noise margin down 9dB as shown here - http://www.kitz.co.uk/routers/dg834GT_targetsnr.htm - What I want to know is why is the output power from the cabinet being limited to 0dBm now, when before it was 18, I am sure if it was able to go to 18 on the cabinet I would be sitting pretty on 20+ megs with that attenuation.

Entirely possible the profile has not been enabled yet. 3 Stage.

Cut to new cabinet (disconnection)
Gear installed and jumpered to port
Profile activated

Either way, even if it did skyrocket to 20mbit. Its still only your link to the card. And about 144mbit back to the exchange for them all to share

12-13ms to my webhost or slingshot, which is better than it was before at 22-23 on this router - will try the other router that gave better pings sometime soon, its just not the most stable of things needing a reset every month or so.

If you are 600 meters from the cabinet, I also would have expected your connect rates to be much better. I am 900 meters from the exchange (old Netmap reading) and sync at 16-17000 depending on the modem in use.

Power isn't really 0dBm (or it wouldn't work) but the power doesn't always get registered, presumably because its automatic on the ADSL2+ cards and will reduce to reflect the short line and prevent your modem receiving too strong a signal (which makes transmission errors). Try resyncing the modem? But honestly the speed and power have to be low enough to prevent crosstalk with other lines, so it may be just a result of the spectrum management profiles getting activated.

Time to find a new industry!

Why wouldnt 0dBm work? It was 18 before with a 48-50dB attenuation so would have been recieving -30dBm - now with transmit at 0dBm and 12dB attenuation it will be getting -12dBm - only an improvement of 18dB over pre cabinet.

Can the cabinets gear generate the same signal levels that the stuff at the exchange operated with? It obviously is a lot smaller and I am guessing it may be limited because of being in a confined space with limited cooling etc.

Identical equipment. Alcatel 7302 ISAM rack with cards. Just not as many. Fibre link back to the local exchange and backboned from there.

Artificial restrictions can get put on the cards/ports to even out everyones connection rates/issues/signal

And remember just cause you are 600m from it, it doesn't mean your cable doesn't go around the corner down the street and back around 2 more to get to it rather than directly down the road.

I wouldn't be overly worried about the stats. It's not like you are going to max out that 14mbit 100% from every source with the way the cards are configured and cabled back to the exchange. Check with your neighbours. If they get more I would then start to be concerned, but there's not really a lot you can do about it.

I was 3 before ADSL2+, 4 ADSL2+ pre cabinet. 16 after, down to around 13-14 a year or so on since. But still only max out at 1.2M/s from shared resources like akamai hosted services and some reliable HTTP boxes.

Just be thankfull its not still jetstart like I started with. 128kbit both ways. Those were the days.
