So I've been spoiled for the last few years by living in a property which was serviced by TelstraClear Cable. But recently I moved, which required switching to ADSL. I stayed with TelstraClear but am now effectively on a wholesaled Telecom service.

My ADSL router reports a connection speed of 15 mbps, but if I do a speedtest.net test to the Auckland server I get widely differing speeds depending on time of day.

For instance in the evening I'll get typically less than 1 mbps - last night it was 0.37 but around midnight suddenly the taps opened and it shot up to 12 mbps.

This is fairly regular, evenings are always slow.

This is a bit disappointing. For the last few years my Cable service has been rock-solid, reliable and not subject to speed variations.

I don't want to complain and get the usual fob-offs about unplugging items etc - they're obviously heavily throttling it at peak time but won't admit to that, and will try to shift the blame of course.

My question, then: Is this a common experience with ADSL here? Like I said, having been on cable the last few years I am obviously thoroughly spoiled.

I can understand int'l bandwidth being constrained, but this is in-country! Highly disappointing :(

Yep, that looks about normal. (Blame crap backhaul or handover link limits)

Well if that's normal then perhaps they won't object if I start trickle-paying my bill at $5 per day, starting on the Due Date.

I've heard of this quite a bit unfortunately.. I'm on an ADSL connection here though which is provisioned through Telecom Wholesale and I am able to consistently get 15Mbps+ any time of day.  So perhaps a congestion issue at the exchange or an issue with Telstra themselves?

Fine here , mind you Im with Snap and the speed is constant 24/7, always has been.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

first, don't fully trust the speedtest results,

i guess it is common to see a speed drop at peaktime, but not as the hugh speed drop you mentioned though...

also, has the condition of broadband usage change in you house between daytime and evening? like, how many computer at day-time, how many at evening?

No changes. Same computer, day and evening. There are no changes from "slow" to "fast" periods that would have any impact. There is only one computer being used as I live alone.

Can you go to http://www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps and tell us whether your are connected to a cabinet or exchange?

Also can you post the modem/line stats (attenuation, noise margin, line rate etc) from the adsl modem/router?

Yes I am connected to a Cabinet. Cabinet Name: KIL/H apparently.

Below is the info re Noise Margins etc. It doesn't change substantially from "slow" times to "fast" times. For example right before I captured this I did a speed test and got a download speed of 0.7 MBPS to the Auckland server.

Fairly unusual to get such dramatic drops in throughput on a cabinet.

Could you also post a tracert result from wxc.net.nz as that would be the speedtest server you are using.

Are you getting good uptimes for the modem? It just seems strange to see a low power profile with your sync and also your attainables.

Also could you check to see if your speedtest result is still as bad? The latency results seem to be reasonably good for an interleaved connection.

Uptime right now is around 86 hours.

At 23:22, I was getting 0.7 MBPS down. At 23:33 someone opened the taps and now I'm getting 10.6 down, 0.6 up.

<cynicism>I *really* don't think it's an ADSL issue. I believe it's a "we're throttling the hell out of your connection due to oversold capacity but can't admit that to you so will give you the usual run-around about your equipment or interference until you hopefully quit bugging us about it" issue </cynicism>

Sounds like handover link congestion from Telecom wholesale to Xnet. The basic path your data takes is:

Your Line > Cabinet/Exchange > Backhaul > Handover Link > ISP network (domestic/international transit/caching etc)

As far as I know Xnet are not yet using Telecom wholesale's newer EUBA service to provide adsl services. You are likely still getting adsl using the older BUBA or UBS services from Telecom wholesale.

Telecom retail are using EUBA for all their new connections (and migrating old customers) where the customer is connected to a new cabinet or exchange that is capable of it. I believe Maxnet, Slingshot, Snap, Orcon are using EUBA now too.

Unless someone from Xnet can elaborate on their plans, personally I'd change ISP.

Changing to an ISP who can provision your connection via EUBA will likely resolve the problem imo.
