Hey guys,
I've just got some quotes through regarding an internet connection for our office in Lower Hutt and they seem excessively expensive. ISP is Orcon and they wholesale via Telecom wholesale, Citylink and Telstra. E.g.

Telstra fibre 5mbps: $1642/month

Telecom HSNS 5mbps: $742/month

Whereas if we were in Citylink covered area we could get 25mbps for $495/month!

Citylink only seems to go to Petone though but apparently they have a short range wireless service coming out which extends that. I saw recently that it looks like they have taken over smartlinx3 which seems to cover our location?

Anyone have any comment? The difference in price would make it almost cheaper to look for premises in Petone just for the internet!

Citylink is not an ISP, that $495 is an access charge to get you from your location to your ISP and then you pay your ISP for International/National access.

There are a few Citylink ISP's around like DTS etc and you may find that you could get a decent connection for less from a wireless ISP like nzwireless.

Depending on your needs 5mbit of unmetered Nat/Int for $500-1000/mth is what I would expect to pay

Most problems are the result of previous solutions...

I realize the access charge is separate but these are the prices Orcon quoted me for internet connection + unlimited national (it would join our current auckland internet + colo international bandwidth pool). I'm just surprised at the massive price difference between the 3 providers. I may ask Orcon if they wholesale cable, Xtreme networks seem to:

Hey guys, an update on this. After giving it some thought I had a Eureka moment.

The plan now is to sign up for VDSL2 from Xtreme Networks. It costs $149 per month and has unlimited national. Unfortunately their international is very expensive so the plan is to build an IPSEC tunnel between our Wellington office and router at the Orcon DC and in Auckland. We then will tunnel all traffic over this link to share our flat rate international.

Xtreme think we should get 40mbps/10mbps sync so overall a fairly good deal!

40/10 seems to be standard, just had a Snap VDSL2 circuit installed and that syncs at 42/12

Wow that's actually a pretty cool idea, let us know how it works out.
