Hi,

Did you know the Commerce Commission is doing a study on drivers and barriers to uptake of high speed broadband services?

This is an excting study into how we'll all get the most out of high speed broadband and the Government's UFB network.

We are posting this message to tell you about our free conference in February next year, (20 and 21 February, mark your diaries) and, in the lead-up to the conference, we are interested in your views on issues related to the study.

My current barriers are:

* Data caps/Cost - at 16 times the cost of Australia, it's hard to get people excited about data intensive applications.
* Confidence in Billing - with the number of usage meter problems out there currently, bill shock is still an issue.

Drivers:

* CPE - Consumer friendly CPE drives demand for speed and data.
* Trusted Applications - users trust a web browser so they use it, they trust email so they use it.
* Upload speeds - Give users the ability to throw data at the internet fast and they will. I can snap off 1Gb of photos in 30 minutes but how long does that currently take me to throw at a web server? I can snap 10Gb of video in an hour. How long does that take me to share?

Fix those issues and the rest will take care of itself.

SO if you make it HEAPS faster, and make the caps HEAPS bigger, and invest a HEAP of money in improving billing systems... Are you prepared to pay more for your Internet than you pay now?

15 years ago my internet access was free - it was a 14k4 dial up to a provider with a 64k Frame link to Waikato.

Today I pay $400 a month.

15 years ago I paid $500 a month for mobile and land lines.

Today I pay $35.

So yes. ARPU wise, as a telco you're having more and more trouble getting revenue from me and over 15 years you'd be looking to get a larger amount of cash from me, yet clearly my spend is going down.

What is interesting is to look at what I'm spending on CPE in the same space.

The problem you have as a telco is, what do you think I'll do if you don't bring me more speed, more data and better billing?

Do you think I'll settle for what I have now and accept that this is just the way it is? Is that a risk you're prepared to take?

Reverse devil's advocate...

No I wouldn't be happy paying more because to me it still seems someone is making monopoly supernormal profits on access which pushes up the price of internet in NZ a lot compared to Australia.

Telecom 2010 figures were:

Access Services (Chorus) – a profit of $571m on revenue of $1,059m, so profit is 54% of revenue
Wholesale Services – a loss of $10m on revenue of $925m, so profit is -1% of revenue
Retail Services – a profit of $143m on revenue of $3,301m, so profit is 4% of revenue

The running joke being that Access prices are so high not even Telecom Wholesale can make a profit!

Anyway you might say it's not fair to look at revenue vs profit without looking at capital. So if you look at capital vs profit for Chorus in 2010

2bn assets, 571m profit, 57% of revenue - still fantastic!

Pre UFB the cost of access is a major albatross.

Post UFB the cost of access will still be a major albatross because the wholesale cost is still something like $38 /mo per user for 30Mb/10Mb access before handover, backhaul etc etc etc.

Well, I am (and do). But then I buy products or services that reflect the value I receive from them. On average my personal telecommunications spend has increased every year for the last 7+ several years.

Why? Because more and more of my income depends on it.

Hi again,

The Commission today published the first of three issues papers ahead of the The Future with High Speed Broadband conference on 20 and 21 February 2012.

The first paper deals with key technical issues:
? The cost of non-standard connections, premises re-wiring and the provision of customer premises equipment
? National and international transit
? Peering, internet protocol (IP) interconnection and network neutrality
? Data caps
