Hi, I have no landline connected but have phone jacks on the wall.  Does the isp run the internet through the pohone line/cable but just with no phone?

ADSL doesnt require a dialtone to work, so they can just use the line for internet data packets but not voice.

Thanks. I just bought a wireless modem. Does that mean I can plug that into the phone jack which an isp is supplying naked bband thru and my laptop will pick up the wireless signal from the modem? looking at naked dsl deals.

Yes that's basically right, I would configure it first before plugging it into the phone jack.

At first you'll want to plug your laptop into the modem/router via network cable to configure it.

You can get into the admin for the modem by going to the ip address (usually 192.168.1.254 for a Thomson by default) in your web browser.

Then for most ISP's (except Telecom who authenticate you by your line) you'll need to put your ISP provided login details into the connection settings of the device for the ADSL connection.

Also you'll probably want to adjust the wireless settings ie: change the wireless network name and set up a password so only people that know the password can use it.

Then unplug your laptop from the network cable and connect it via wireless, you should still be able to get into the modem admin via the ip address over wireless.

Next hook up the modem to the phone jack and see if it connects.

For ISP's have a look at Slingshot, Snap, Orcon, Vodafone, Xnet for naked ADSL plans.

Telecom and Telstraclear do not offer naked ADSL plans but it's also worth noting that typically a naked adsl plan will only be $10-20/month cheaper than a phone and Internet package.

Have a thomson telecom T585v7 wireless modem and a macbook pro OSX 10.6.7 that I haven't been able to get to pick up wifi at the library yet. I'm sure I'll be able to work it out. This site has been awesomely educational for me just starting to get up with the play with everything.
