I am planning a move from Norway to New Zealand, and am in the process of researching broadband, wireless internet (mobile and Wi-fi) and good web hosting providers.

To start with the on topic (for the forum) question:

It seems, from the discussions I have been reading, that Snap is considered to be one of the better ISPs for broadband, but I have seen mentioned that Telecom might be better for people working overseas. I need a stable connection with the least possible (in as much as thats possible, with the two countries being so far apart) lag to Norway. Mostly FTP and SSH, but also RDP (Remote desktop). I will also be using Skype a lot, but that seems like a normal service in New Zealand.

So the question: Which broadband provider should I choose?

Will be moving to Wellington or the Kapiti coast (most likely around Paraparaumu). Will that make my hunt for a good ISP harder?

I am spoiled on access to uncapped broadband here, but for every day work its more important to have a broadband provider that has high uptime, quick response to problems and a good customer service department.

Wellington and Kapiti Coast area, you'll have access to undoubtly stable TelstraClear cable services (inHome). I'm in Christchurch and I've triple-service with TCL and very satisfied.

Sounds promising, looks like their WarpSpeed 120G is close to what I have today, although quite a bit more expensive.

Where do I post questions about mobile broadband? I am using iPhone 4s, on the GSM/3G network, which operator is the one with best coverage and speeds?

Depends... I am with Vodafone NZ on (grandfathered) Smart 2 plan and quite happy with it. Telecom XT network has great acceptance by many others and coverage. 2Degrees has cheapest but limited 3D data coverage.

There are other MVNOs as well and TelstraClear also have their own mobile service (using Vodafone NZ's network)

If latency is your key concern your probably best to go with an ISP who has a farther reaching network. IE Telecom/Telstra/Orcon all have direct routes to the US from where they get transit bandwidth to Europe. i don't know of any NZ provider whose network goes all the way to Europe.

Mobile wise 2degrees is generally the cheapest/most flexible and you have coverage in kapiti for cheap 3g but its expensive when roaming on Vodafone network (outside of main towns) for data.

Web hosting there are a few providers to look at. Maybe:
http://sitehost.co.nz
http://web-2u.co.nz
http://webdrive.co.nz

To name a few

Zeon and chiefie, thanks for great suggestions.

Zeon, I especially liked the speed and info I could find on Webdrive, looks like a good operation - do you have any experience in hosting with them?

2degrees sounds like a good choice for mobile broadband and cell phone service, will have to look at that.

About latency, I think I will have to live with about 300 ms ping times from NZ to Norway, I checked the route from here to Webdrive with this: http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/visual-tracert/

Goes from Norway -> Washington -> Los Angeles -> Sydney -> Wellington -> Auckland

Route from here to Webdrive is 21 jumps!

To a Telecom address I actually had 31 jumps, and some of them went back and forth between the east and west coast of the US!

Snap.co.nz was also interesting. Back and forth east/west coast US, then to Auckland, and then to Sydney before going to Christchurch.

Sure is an interesting thing to research this ;)

I used to host my website with WebDrive - but I have closed my website as I don't have a need for it anymore... and they're pretty good. If you keen, feel free to use my referral link.

www.openhost.co.nz

www.domains4less.co.nz

These two are a little bit cheaper than web drive but both are actually owned and operated by Web drive now.  Basically budget brands/arms of the same company.

Also http://www.webslice.co.nz/ is good, run by a few guys that are regulars on the other big NZ tech forum www.gpforums.co.nz

Hey Zeon who do Unleash use for international transit?  I was thinking Unleash VDSL2 (assuming he can get it where he will live) might good option for this guys as it sounds like he will be doing a lot of work from home.

As for ISP's, I think you would be hard to go past Telstra's HFC cable network, but as Wellington and Kapiti have been recently cabinetised the DSL options with Telecom, Orcon and Snap would be also good.
