A little while ago I found out that my parents' connection is dropping out frequently (several times per day). My dad told me about it shortly after his exchange (he's not on a cabinet) was upgraded to ADSL2+ but I'm not absolutely sure whether the issue started at the same time.

The internal wiring is a mess and although it's worked without issue for ADSL1 for the past ten years, I thought that 2+ may be "stricter" so I installed a master splitter. This has not helped; the connection still drops out. This results in the connection stalling for about a minute while the modem reconnects.

The modem is a Dynalink RTA1320. I believe that the chipset in this modem isn't one of the "bad" ones (I have the same model myself and don't have any issues).

I'm not sure what else to try! Any suggestions? :)

Hi, what are the line stats from the modem, the RTA's have a reputation of eventually overheating and going bad, so could be the modem, assuming line stats are fine and you have correctly installed the filter then modem is the next step, if that does not fix it then off to our ISP to get Chorus to look from their end.

I won't be able to get the stats until next time I'm around there. The attenuation looked OK but I don't recall the number :(

I'll take my modem next time I'm there and see what happens.

Hi, sounds like a sensible path, eliminate all the potential issues your end then throw it back to the ISP.

Try a different modem,

It sure sounds like a dying RTA 1320 to me, I've seen the same thing quite a few times before with the same model.

Remember with the RTA 1320 there is no heatsink on the chip, poor case design and cheap low rated capacitors.. the model is a dog and they a high failure rate within 1-2 years.

The best bang for buck replacements at the moment would be these two TP Link models:

TP Link TD 8840 (modem/router/switch) ~$60

TP Link TD W8960N (modem/router/switch/wireless) ~$110

I was around there again today so I took my own modem with me, and didn't run into any problems. Looks like a new modem is in order!

Thanks for your help :)

If you are going to get the TD 8840, avoid the new 8840T version which has a different chipset (Trendnet instead of Broadcom).

Well dad's currently being cheap and is in the "I can put up with it disconnecting" mindset so I'll just smile and nod... and will laugh once it fails completely :)

Thanks for the modem advice though!
