Hi all.

I'm finally moving to the modern age and getting broadband. I have both an ADT monitored alarm and Sky Digital which means I should get the full Connection and Wiring option, but I've heard that this isn't really required and normal line filters can be used instead - this is from people in similar situations who've gone for the Self Install without any probs.

Has anyone got opinions on this?

I have if I had the option in my area. I have the choice of Woosh or Telecom.

Ive seen Woosh work well, is there anyone in the area you know that has it?
From personal experience with alarms and ADSL it really doesnt go well together at times it took speeds to 2Kbps although that may of just been the adsl itself...

Hello lugh,
I have been running a sky digital box on the same phoneline for quite a while without any abverse effects, the key is to ensure that you have an ADSL filter running on the line to the decoder and that its plugged into the phone plug rather than the ADSL plug.

Alternatively if you are one of the people who don't like the ability to order pay per view movies through the box or have the sky box phone home... then you should be fine leaving it unplugged from the phoneline.

In regards to the alarm, I have had no experience with it but it is my understanding that you should get it done otherwise when the alarm 'phones' home* it can disrupt your connection.

* Not sure on exact process.

There is no real show stopping issues with either of the devices you mention. I would not bother with a complete wire install job unless you feel as though you are well out of your depth, but this is not rocket science.

Firstly the security system, just ensure that it is downside of a filter as if it were anyother pots device, and ensure that it does not have the ability to seize and break the line. If you ring whoever installed it they should be able to ensure that it is setup for ADSL compatibility. Just treat it as a POTS phone device. The installer should not cost a lot to carry this out, if recently installed they may be able to state over the phone if it is ADSL freindly.

Sky Decoders, just treat them as another POTS device (ie another phone) and put a filter in the lead from the wall socket to the STB, or as cokemaster said disconnect it if you dont use any of the features it offers.

Same applies to all other POTS devices. but ensure you have no more than five filters in circuit, ideally one filter should be placed on the incoming line that then feeds all POTS devices with the direct incoming line (before the filter) going direct to the ADSL modem.

Extrapolating from your responses, what it sounds like to me is that the installation is the technician installs a splitter on the main phone line to the house, runs a new line to the modem and puts a filter on the old line? Sounds a bit like a quick buck to me.

if you have 3 or more POTS outlet. it is certainly highly recommended to have technician install a splitter. I had it installed when I was on ADSL and then you live the life as per normal with normal phone jack. Sure it is a bit pricey but it general gives better signal (or that could be the impression)
