The broadband battle is over today.The plans which slingshot and ihug have offered are no match to that of Xtra's Go Large plan.Slingshot and Ihug continue to cap the speed and have not really offered better service to customers. If these plans are not changed, I truly do beleive that these ISP will lose their customers to Xtra.The quality of service that Slingshot has been providing has also been really poor with continuous disconnections of the internet.

Slingshot and Ihug have lost and this is rather disappointing.Hopefully something will be done about this.

I do not entirely agree with you, because Xtra's Go Large plan has some flaws. Although it provides unlimited data, the Fair Use policy and traffic management are opposed by P2Pers, simply because they are restricted to 700 mb of download in the On Peak time period. Slingshot, however, provides a large data of 25GB which I am content with. Heavy users might consider Xtra's Go Large Plan.

on paper they have lost but time will tell if the unlimited plan is truly unlimited. in theory someone could download several hundred gigs per month on the go large plan but i doubt they will allow that.
It's too early to tell and remember the acceptable use policy can be altered if people 'abuse' the unlimited plan.
Anyhow time for me to use that extra 25gb slingshot just gave me :))

They are all flawed- Slingshots new plans suck completely, Ihugs plans aren't good enough, and Xtra is a bit unfair with the management plan.

None of them work for me, and I'm looking at alternative options. I don't think it's good enough that this is all that the ISPs in NZ can come out with. It's appalling.

For me as a user, it looks like a battle between Orcon and TelstraClear PDQ (can't get cable). However, Slingshot may save ther collective asses if they come out with something more suitable.

I've just had another look- better, but still not good enough.

Ultra Plus, which is LS/128k is okay- 25GB of data and LS down. But only 128 up and it's $49.95 a month.
Pro 3 looks okay, LS/LS, but there is only 3GB of data. Again, this is $49.95 a month.

Slingshots new plans are still appalling, though. At this stage Express Everyday (256/128 with 25GB) is tied for first with Ultra Plus (LS/128k with 25GB). But Ultra Plus is a bit on the expensive side and Express Everyday is a bit on the slow side.

Internet in NZ is shocking.

yup if we're comparing these plans to those on offer overseas then they def suck. then again i've lived in africa where broadband is shockingly pathetic so NZ is heaps better in comparison.

yup... they all suck... they will all have "shaping" or throtlling" of one form or another... we're better of than some places, worse of than others...

a question... to which I should know the answer (I'm sure others would be interested in the answer...) when will it be possible to maintian multiplie ISP's over one line? i.e. have xtra and ihug on the same "last mile"??

I wouldn't say that they've lost the battle.

Most if not all of the major 'ISP's' have come out with competing offers to the new 'managed' plans...

Ihugs plans suck, Slingshots plans suck, Orcons plans suck, Telstra's plans suck, Iconz plans suck, Maxnet's plans suck.

Xtra's plans are pretty suprising, the go large doesn't suck, but it's not as attractive as it looks at first blush.

But Woosh (from having bought out Quick Silver) has entered the game and has a plan that on the face of it betters the Go Large plan.

They don't throttle p2p according to technicians (but may deprioritise it for more real time data or at least that's what they did with wireless).
They don't stick you in a pool of leechers (eww) for a week if you go over 700mb in prime time. (they just slow you down to 56kbit till midnight, this means you can use the 700mb knowing that the worst that will happen is very temporary dialup speeds)

They have an on peak time of 5pm to midnight, 1 hour better than Xtra.

And while I couldn't verify it with them I'm 99% sure you could turn interleaving off because AFAIK Telecom allows it on all but Xtra account now.

Yes it would be nice to have full speed up too, and unlimited data in peak too but for New Zealand this plan is pretty revolutionary when you consider the price, speed and wide availibility of DSL! (well, it would be revolutionary if Xtra didn't start the revolution, WTF Xtra doing something good?!?!?!?!?)

Maybe TCL's PDQ does but the problem is that the limitations of the plan are primarily being set by Telecom.

In regards to TCL's cable network I still believe these plans offer some of the best value plans there are if you want a quality connection. 20GB for $69.99 or 40GB for $99.99 with 4Mbps downstream, 2Mbps upstream and with no catches such as P2P throttling and peak/offpeak times.

Many people will argue these prices are expensive compared to ADSL. Those same people then complain when their $29.99 "unlimited" plan gives them 5kbps downloads. The internet is like many other services in this world - if you want quality you have to pay for it.

Woosh's thing sounds interesting- I'll have to look into that. But it might just be utter suckfulness as well.

Quality? We don't need no stinking quality. As long as it's cheap! Well, no actually. He's right- if you want quality you're gonna have to pay for it (unfortunately).

Quality can only be discovered by trying it, even Slingshot (Edit: I mean Woosh) don't know what the quality will be as it depends in large part on how much normal users (read 'not people who used to use 60-80GB and now plan on using 100-200GB a month) decode the plan's for them.

Obviously for the price and unlimited offpeak data it would be a fair guess that it won't be the speediest DSL plan at any NZ ISP, but if it is decent or crap it's too early to know.

As many normal users should be encouraged to join this plan as possible, I hope Woosh advertises it well.

Except for the onpeak limit, which I concede is probably needed I think it's the perfect plan, only change I would make is to offer another version of it $20-$30 per month more expensive with unconstrained upload speed. (this would cost $10 more for Woosh forgetting the cost of extra data possibly used)

Better make it clear: companies providing DSL services. TCL cable is based on static IP.

TCL's 40GB ($99.95) and 80GB ($139.95) plans are at 10Mbps, the 10GB ($49.95) and 20GB ($69.95) plans are 4Mbps.

1GB & 5GB plans are 2Mbps but only available with a phone line ($61.90 & $71.90 respectively).
