Just got this email:

We are very sorry to inform you that we have had to make the very difficult decision to withdraw our popular 'global mode' service from the market for the time being.

We sincerely to you for putting this halt to 'global mode,' which will happen tonight at 11.59pm.

While legal opinions have supported FYX's global mode under New Zealand law, it is important for us to cease operation of our Global Mode for now due to increased pressure.

If you do wish to continue with FYX, we would like to offer you a new, lesser price of $30.30 per month, with $0.30 per GB for data. We will also backdate this price to when you first signed up.

If you would like to leave the FYX service due to the discontinuation of Global Mode, we completely understand. We will refund you for any service you have used of ours to date, and if you have had to break any contracts to move to our service, we will refund you those costs with sufficient evidence.

FYX is committed to open access and will continue to work for the benefit of New Zealand consumers.

Yours sincerely,
Andrew Schick and the FYX team

I'm amazed at how quickly it's gone away, and it's annoying that the main reason that I signed up will be gone in six hours.

On the other hand, so far the connection's been faster than the TCL connection it replaces, is cheaper, and I haven't run into any transparent proxy "crashes" yet ;)

It's great someone tried to do something to address the opportunity, but there's more to it than just a technology configuration.

I *really* wish the content providers would recognize what they can do in other countries and work to bring stuff here, and stop forcing people to faff around with VPN tunnels and other technology sticky plasters just to view TV. Australia/NZ is a 25m people of attractive economic value....

Yep... This is media announcement:

FYX stops global mode. For now…

New ISP FYX has made a decision to withdraw its popular ‘global mode’ service from the market for the time being.
FYX sincerely apologises to our customers and the New Zealand internet community for putting a halt to ‘global mode,’ which will happen tonight at 11.59pm.

While legal opinions have supported FYX’s global mode under New Zealand law, there are matters that require further consideration before continuing the service.

FYX customers are currently being contacted.

Future and existing customers wishing to continue with FYX will pay a new, reduced price of $30.30 per month, with $0.30 per GB for data.

FYX is committed to delivering great internet and will continue to work for the benefit of New Zealand consumers.

Yeah the first post in NZNOG just came in on an ITN News article regarding it. It stayed quiet for a while in there.

Ha! I really hope someone's head rolls for this little stunt. I would like to know the time every ISP in the country spent explaining to clients that the internet that they were getting WASN'T sub-par as FYX have tried to make out. Within hours of this hitting the paper's i got a call from a client wanting to know why we were restricting their internet and what we were going to do about it. That was not a fun phone call to take and I'm sure I wasn't the only one.

Despite being legal in NZ the idea was so totally flawed and unsupportable I struggle with the mental gymnastics needed to say this was a good idea and they should have done it. They were marketing a service that required multiple 3rd parties to turn a blind eye to EULA/TOS violations that would have been clearly identifiable to any network admin worth his salt.

I do like the "for now" bit in it tho, I highly doubt we'll see global mode back in any way that resembles what it sounds like

Haha, and that that was along the lines of the first follow up:

To quote:

"I'd be interested to hear how much time various ISP's have spent this week dealing with concerned clients that called up wanting to know why they are getting a sub-par internet experience because of the ISP"

Just when it was starting to get interesting, along come the MAFIAA killjoys. Still, it's not too late for them to be the Ihug of the broadband age.

"I regret to say that we of the F.B.I. are powerless to act in cases of oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate commerce." — J. Edgar Hoover

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper." — Andrew Maxwell

Hmm, www.unblock-us.com redirects to www.fyx.co.nz. I wonder whether this redirection will disappear at midnight. Does anyone know how much unblock-us costs?
