Behodar: Hmm, www.unblock-us.com redirects to www.fyx.co.nz. I wonder whether this redirection will disappear at midnight. Does anyone know how much unblock-us costs?

It's the kinda thing geeks talk about when drinking:

"Hey man, you know what we should do on monday? wireshark netflix and co to find the DNS domains used and forward them specifically to unblock-us.com and point the rest at our normal DNS servers so other CDN's still come from our nodes

AND what would make it totally awesome would be to open it up to all APE ranges so anyone could use it in NZ, Crap my beer's empty - get me another would ya? *hic*"

I understand questions like this can seem face slappingly obvious to one skilled in the art, but your opinion would be interesting if you have the time and and patience lol.

Unblock-Us.com run a service to do exactly what gloabl mode did, It does DNS magic to get you Netflix & Co, If whats being said is true then FYX simply pointed the right DNS domains like netflix.com, hulu.com, huluim.com to forwarded to the unblockus services whilst queries fro trademe.co.nz stayed local.

It's clever if you have the skill because the downside to unblock-us.com being using on an end user computer is things like youtube.com come from the USA rather than your ISP's server down the road. I have a personal DNS server I use to do this exact same method.

The problem is that Netflix.com is still sending the streaming data to your normal old NZ IP address, On it's own it's hard for netflix to police as you have thousands of single IP's from around the world getting streaming but there is where FYX would have come unstuck had this lasted more than a few days.

It would have been very, very, very easy for someone like Netflix to block FYX's entire IP range, Not just a single IP but every range they used. Effectively breaking global mode in one easy step. No real way around this quickly. Even rotating VPN's wouldn't have helped because almost all VOD sites use CDN's so in order to only route the VOD traffic down these VPN tunnel's you'd need to keep updating the routing to route various CDN's over this VPN least you end up blocked still.

Whilst the whole thing is "legal" in NZ you still have to face commercial reality, This service was only going to annoy QuickFlix,SkyTv,*AA alot as QuickFlix and Sky have rights to content in NZ and the *AA would like to keep the current ANZ right's holders happy. Plus if they hadn't pulled the service now it would have been a very easy way for sites like netflix to block them and happily report back to the *AA that they are being good and actively blocking non-USA clients.

Yes that will stop at midnight, so you can just sign up yourself after then.. but you'll loose local CDNs and caching etc if you use their internationally hosted DNS servers if you use them directly.

The custom Piggybacking off unblock-us wasn't really a secret, it's not done how you'd probably think either, it is/was really brilliant, but you could still see it clearly in a trace route if anyone did bother to try.

Guess we just have to wait around for a bit to see whether this is a minor delay or a permanent end to 'Global-Mode' ;)

Soo... how many complaints is this going to result in? I'm guessing Maxnet/Fyx's customer service line is going to be inundated with some pretty pissed off (ex-)customers. Still decent pricing though, but doesn't hold a candle to some of the massive data plans available from the likes of Telecom or Orcon.

Here's how I see the whole Fyz thing. No, I know you didn't ask.

My analogy is that it's like you all work in the pizza business. And you're all discussing a rival pizza company because they've put a blinking LED on their pizza.

Sure, you can't eat it. Or maybe you can? But maybe for a few weeks before everyone goes "You can't eat LEDs, it's not legal!!!"

So you all go on and on and on about the flashing LED on the pizza. Is it legal? Is it not? What happens if you EAT the LED? Will you have to be rushed to hospital? Will you be OK? OMFG!!!! OMG!?!?! Is it LEGAL to put an LED ON A PIZZA? PULL IT OFF!! But what if I can't pull it off? Will I get sued? LOOK! LOOK AT IT FLASH!

They're selling pizza. But you're all OMFG about the flashing LED that may, or may not, come with the pizza. You've told all your family. Your friends. You've got just the best and smartest opinion about the legality of selling a flashing LED and you've told _everyone you know_ about it.

And now, horror of horrors, you've found out the pizza DOES NOT come with a flashing LED. That's it. They've officially called it. No more flashing LEDs.

Now you're left with a normal, boring pizza. One you've not even tried but you know know you probably hate it.

Oh and there's one marketing company behind it all that can't stop laughing.

@muppet, lol, that thought crossed my mind tonight waiting under the dark lit basement car-park at pack and save for what seemed an eternity for the little amount of shopping bags that came back to the car.

But then, I thought I wonder if they thought of that too! And what's next? Now that would be clever marketing. A day or week or two of not having service.

That would make good political gusto having, then oh, not having, what was all this about fibre to the home, for what? -talk. Sounds like radio, they weren't happy with that either when it came along playing songs to people for free to them. They soon learned radio was doing most of the selling of content on their behalf eventually, although they still take their couple of cents royalties when it's played.

I immediately think FX networks though when I read FYX. Then I think about FX as in fibre and IP TV.

It makes fibre to the home look less interesting if it doesn't pan out or the content providers don't pull finger and get more in to NZ. So it's a good testing the waters for a pre-residential fibre period. That kind of on and off could have good political pressure attached with it for I dunno, say getting rid of the file sharing act or re-writting it since really an IP address doesn't mean much these days as to who's doing the infringing.

But I get off topic, apologies.

That's cheeky about re-directing DNS requests for unblick-us.com to themselves (or those using their DNS servers). Clever. However I wouldn't be happy if I knew my ISP was sending me to another site I didn't want. I smell the filtering smoke lingering around that.
