When I woke up this morning I found that I had no connection. I was getting an IP address but nothing else was working. After talking to support we resolved this by temporarily setting DNS to 8.8.8.8. If anyone else also has problems today, try doing the same, but be sure to let Fyx know that you're having problems. They're investigating it and hope that I'll be able to set it back to manual again later.

insane:
Behodar: Hmm, www.unblock-us.com redirects to www.fyx.co.nz. I wonder whether this redirection will disappear at midnight. Does anyone know how much unblock-us costs?

Yes that will stop at midnight, so you can just sign up yourself after then.. but you'll loose local CDNs and caching etc if you use their internationally hosted DNS servers if you use them directly.

Slightly OT but my experience with the unblock service is that. If you change DNS in your router then you loose local CDN's and local sites become very slow. For example NZHerald often won't load for me with unblock.

But I have a compromise.  Since I only pretty much watch streaming sites on a device like a PS3, etc, not a PC, I have reverted back to my ISP's DNS servers in the router so my desktop sessions work fine and code the Unblock DNS server addresses in the devices only. Since I don't need local CDN resolution for streaming services, that works fine. It also overcomes the problem with an ISP using a transparent proxy which overwrites your DNS requests with their own resolution and then passing onto the destination site, your true IP address. That of course then gets the geofencing working again but since apparently devices don't normally use port 80, the transparent proxy is bypassed.

It's intereting what fyx was doing. They must have worked a deal with unblock to allow a certain IP address range to use their servers since you can't use the unblock service until you register your IP and pay them an annual fee. Then as has been noted in this thread, they did the routing intelligently which we can't do at home easily and only router DNS requests for the streaming sites to unblock and all others to their own DNS servers.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

My Fyx is Fyx'd!

8.8.8.8 is Google public DNS, if you set your modem back to automatic, it should be sweet now.

Opps - >

As per stuff.co.nz (http://www.stuff.co.nz/technology/digital-living/6916019/FYX-shut-down-Global-Mode-offering)

--snip--

Only a week after generating a significant amount of fanfare by announcing a 'Global Mode' that would allow New Zealand internet subscribers to use region-locked content services such as Hulu or BBC's iPlayer, ISP FYX has announced they will no longer be providing the service.

--snip--

Pitty.. was a great idea

It seemed far too good to be true.

Clearly wasn't legally checked properly, which at the very least you would have expected BEFORE launching!

Very odd behaviour by the owners.

I'd say it's more likely Maxnet recieved a letter from one of the media players lawyers politely asking them to cease and desist.

They may have been doing nothing 'illegal' but would they be willing to bet $250k+ of legal fees on proving it and taking a chance?

Right but who in their right mind wouldn't have expected that? Obviously they would have spent at least  that setting up that operation in the first place.

These type of services are better left for small off shore enterprises that specialise in this type of thing.

Surprise surprise. It won't be making a comeback, no chance.

Would've been a good candidate for some kind of private 'ask geekzone people focus group' research before launching..
