Not sure why, but I NEVER have a resync.

How often does your lines resync?

IS that question directed at anyone, or just a general question? :)

When on DLM1 my line never resyncs - and that's what you want. The few times I've dropped off DLM1 it's dropped me 2 DLM profiles, then it takes 4-5 weeks to return to DLM2 (1 resync) then a couple of days to return to DLM1 (another resync) Those are the only resyncs I generally see.

That's what I was asking, was a general question, thanks for that. I assumed it resynced even if there weren't any changes to be made. I

Hi all,

Firstly, apologies as I'm sure most of this will have been covered; but this thread is just too long to read the whole thing.

I recently moved to Snap VDSL with Snap Plus, I am well past the 10 day training and it looks like I'm on DLM-7 (if I understand how to read the information properly) and not very pleased considering I am only about 60m from the cabinet (according to the calculation used in the first post). The Chorus technician also commented during the install the I was very close to the cabinet.

My sync speed is fine, but my latency is terrible. However, I did not monitor any of this throughout the training period as I only read up about all this stuff after the fact. And while I've read FEC erros are not to be worried about, over half a million in a 15 minute period seems huge?

When Chorus came out they installed the splitter at the jack point rather than at the demarcation point, so I'm wondering if the internal wiring is to blame.

Talking to Snap it seems it will be a mission to get Chorus to come back to do it properly, so I thought it would be easier just to do it myself; but have a couple of questions:

1. Is the high latency and the fact that I am on DLM-7 likely to be due to the internal wiring?

2. Since I am on VoIP, I understand I am best to not use the splitter and just run a single CAT6 straight from the demarcation point into the back of the router; and disconnect any old wiring from the demarcation point. Is this correct?

Thanks in advance for your help

Paul

Just how long has it been since you went to VDSL? It is odd that you're still on DLM-7 - there should have been some change by now. Have there been any resyncs at all?

I don't think your internal wiring is to blame. Internal wiring issues tend to show up as CRC errors, while latency is determined by DLM level and there is nothing in the stats you've posted to suggest why DLM is keeping you on such a high latency. FEC errors are nothing to worry about and we have seen numbers that high before. If you post the graphs from the statistics and spectrum tabs they may shed a bit more light on it.

If you are on a naked connection then you can run cat5 or cat6 cable directly from the demarc to a single jackpoint. There shouldn't be any difference between that setup and a correctly installed filter. When you say Chorus installed the filter at the jack point, is it plugged into the jack point or did they wire it in behind the jack?

My advice would be to ask Snap to get DLM reset on the line. If nothing changes again then see if Snap can raise that as a fault with Chorus. If DLM does work but the CRC error rate is significant (more than 1 CRC per min) then look at the wiring.

For some reason my line just dropped at 2:20am and came online 10 minutes later - and speed increased to the fastest ive ever seen. On DLM-1 too. No idea what's going on.

DLM profile went to one and likely had lower noise on the line when you resynced. Hopefully you keep this speed.

It seems like such a major change when i've had it for months and too many errors for anything but DLM-4.

Heres the bits per carrier, you can see its improved notably in the 256-512 area:

This was it back on the 29th of June:

With associated stats back then:

edit: Just realised thats one with the SNR pushed up instead of default. Im sure theres a screencap without this somewhere.

Chorus guy said he had run out of the proper housings, so it is just a little black box sitting on top of the old phone jack, he then used an existing run of CAT6 that was in the wall feeding to my patch panel for the VDSL.  So I believe it is now - Demarc to filter over old cable (20m or so), then filter to patch panel over CAT6 (another 10m or so), then patch panel to router.

I believe I must have started on a better DLM, as immediately after the connection going to speedtest.net to Snap Christchurch gave me a 6ms ping. It has gotten progressively worse and is now 35ms.

Day of connection:

Today:

Here are screencaps from my stats and spectrum tabs from today:

I'm going to go ahead with running the CAT6 straight from the demarc to the router this weekend anyway, as even if this isn't the cause I figure it can't hurt.

Thanks again

odd that you started on DLM-1, your specturm actually looks pretty nice.

no harm in running the cat6 all the way if you have the resources to do so, will likely improve it, few people with patch panels for their dsl have seen odd things happen, might be worth giving it a run with that variable taken out if possible too..

looking at your error rate, you should defiantly be due to be moving back down profiles..

once rewiring, have your DLM reset, see what happens..

Sorry, forgot to answer this bit. Went onto VDSL on 3 August, so 19 days ago. There have been re syncs, not sure how many though as in that first 10 days I wasn't really watching it as I didn't know any of this stuff at that time.

I'm going to skip the patch panel for the DSL and put an RJ11 directly on the end of the CAT6 run. I'll then make sure it is stable for a couple of days, then get a DLM reset.

Isn't the 500,000 plus FEC errors ridiculously high?

Cool, have just had the big switch thrown, and now on VDSL. Chorus guy never even knocked on the door, so I hope they don't bill Snap for a visit !

Stats page is looking like this:

So with no apparent latency, does that mean I'm straight on DLM1?

Don't really know what to make of the attenuation - on ADSL with my old TP-LINK modem it used to hover around 8.5-9. Then switched to Fritzy (still ADSL) and it reported 4. Now VDSL and it reports 7. Distance? No idea, depends on the cable route.

OK, over a million FEC errors in 15 minutes... that can't possibly be normal???
