Jexlar:
mikenzb: lol, talk about downloading more then my line sync speed can handle from Origin. (Thanks ushare for the bf3 key btw)

The most i've seen on this line is 4.3MB on torrents....

Origin is the biggest speed liar there is. I got much the same speed indication from origin downloading the same files. It's straight up broken.
Why didn't you buy your own key for $5 for charity? Lol

i still say steam is far worse.. least origins is only doubling or there abouts.. rather than downloading 500TB/s ..

hio77: dlm does do odd things, but a step back to DLM-8, are you sure the reset was actually processed? ild expect you to start on iver DLM-4 or DLM-1..

Dairusire: Yeah honestly doesn't look like you've been reset. typically people start on DLM6, I've not heard of someone starting on DLM7 then getting bounced back to DLM8....

I requested it on Saturday and was told it would "probably" happen that afternoon. But if it hasn't happened yet, why would I go from DLM7 to DLM8 when I've had no CRC errors?

I might ring them and see if the reset has actually happened.

In my experience, steam only reports false speeds for extremely short periods (though of course it remains as the 'peak' speed for the session), and usually only when it's actually rebuilding a partial file from your local cache, or downloading a very small update (for example, one of the games I have recently had a 1.7MB patch, and steam seems to fail to calculate anywhere near right when total download time is <1sec). Origin just blatantly goes "LOL GUYS WE'RE GOIN REAL FAST HERE!" when it isn't, at least for me.

I don't remember anyone reporting DLM-8 before. As Dairusire said it normally starts with DLM-6 (though recently some people have started on DLM-1) and improves from there (usually one level every 2-3 days). I'd call Snap and see if they can see what is going on.

smac: Interesting situation going on here. Yesterday just after 12pm VDSL got switched on here. Synced with 7dB attenuation and no added latency, so I take this to mean DLM1.

Because it's kinda mesmerizing I watched the stats off and on during the afternoon, and noted that the CRC rate climbed gradually throughout the afternoon, until by dinner time it was up to 10 per minute.

Around dinner time I did what I'd been meaning to do for a while: rewired the cable from the master filter from connecting to a socket in the wallplate, to an RJ45 plug and whacked it straight into the back of the modem.

From that point on it synced at more or less the same numbers but the errors started climbing even faster. Just got home now from a day away, and CRC count is at 42 per minute. No resync though.

So, questions: is it worth me doing a reset and bumping the SNRM across a notch to stable, or should I wait and see if I get bumped down to DLM2 first?

Second question: if I messed up the polarity of the cable when I crimped on the plug, could that contribute to the error situation? I tried looking online for info, and just found conflicting info and a bunch of flame wars.

For me latency and jitter is way more important than throughput, as the most 'connection dependant' thing I do is video conference. I'd take half the throughput if it meant retaining zero added latency.

Cheers

Looks to me like they have more control than just DLM.

After the post quoted above I got got a resync and bumped to DLM2. Errors were better, but still high enough that I think I would get bumped again (800+ an hour).

At 9am this morning there was a resync, but no DLM change, and errors have flat lined (single figures).

So they can shape the connection in other ways?

Any thoughts on what I could do to try and claw myself back to DLM1?

What Fritzbox firmware are you on? That sounds like it might be the bug where it misreports INP so DLM4 looks like DLM2?

5.51

If that were the case though, then I'd have gone from 2 to 4, which shouldn't happen, theoretically.....

Well 35min on hold and the guy I spoke to must be one of their new help desk staff because he didn't seem to have much idea compared to others I have spoken to.

He said the reset has been done, so I asked why I would have dropped to DLM8 when I was having no errors. Got some vague answers about maybe having a noisy line and to wait the 10 days then call back.

So I guess it'll be a waiting game for a while, but perhaps some of you smarter people can help me in case I have misunderstood what i have been reading.

What are the things that cause DLM to change? I thought it was primarily CRC error count and number of resyncs?

Can you clever people see any reason looking at my stats that the resync at 4:11am should have dropped me from DLM7 to DLM8?

i certainly dont see any reason why your DLM should have gone backwards, maybe they reset your DLM 10 day period, without resetting the DLM profile? DLM is a odd beast, it can often do really odd things..

while DLM calcuations are primarily CRC and resyncs, there is MANY little numbers that go into it, if you look back a fair bit.. you will come across a few outputs that i came across messing with telnet, one of which listed a tone of different error counts and so on.

the thing is, unless your fritz is miss reporting, your line looks set to go down.. not up, once again though, DLM does odd things, takes you by us by surprise once in awhile..

give it a day or two, hopefully it suddenly jumps down to DLM-6 or something.
