SKYMAX: @ sidefx

It's a bit weird that you would have a dip in your lower frequencies, usually it's the higher frequencies everyone loses.

Thanks mate; Though looking at some of the other ones in this thread a few seem to dip around carrier 256 (c.f. richms', SamF's and even the one on 17a in the original post)

Ah well, guess I'll see what happens over the next few days.

The lower frequency's suffer due to crosstalk in the ADSL2+ range from other lines. :)

Well the only way to solve all that pesky adsl crosstalk is to get other ISPs on to selling VDSL instead.

Flatmate is on orcon with genius so will probably never see it, but if slingshot were to offer it I would change my other connection over in an instant even if I had to pay full price for a router.

But yeah, a tech said that there are loads of active ADSL connections down the driveway so that is probably why I get such a lot of crosstalk since they all share a cable to halfway down the driveway.

How seperate are the individual pairs once they are on the cables in the street?

I live in an area with lots of old people, who probably don't have computers, lol, so not much DSL signal competition.

I am still gutted that I have a really poor quality old lead-in cable (25 metres worth running above ground along a fence - must be picking up radio waves!)  If I didn't have a long concrete driveway, I'd be digging up the ground and putting some green conduit in to accept a more modern twisted pair cable.  Which would probably have to happen if I ever wanted fiber anyway.  Chorus has told me they won't install any new lines above ground as it is against their rules.

Well, it's been another 8 days since my last (forced) resync so I resynced again hoping that I'd be on DLM-1... no such luck!!

You still on DLM-2 Napster?

This is getting frustrating and I'm not sure if snap can do anything about it...

So instead of crosstalk on just the ADSL frequencies you'd have crosstalk on all the VDSL frequencies. If you want your connection to suffer from less crosstalk you should be encouraging your neighbours to use dialup, not VDSL!

You should encourage the use of VDSL2 on the 17a profile. 17a is lower power, so if you have customers close to the cabinet on 17a, then the customers further away will actually benefit by having less cross-talk.

I wonder if DLM\RAMBO(?)\whatever is configurable? Could it possibly have been set to be "more conservative"?

I'm still not clear on what parameters it uses, or what is required to reduce DLM profile. Anybody care to comment on whether they think I should have dropped back to DLM2 given error rates, etc in my screenshots above?

As a customer I can't even get on a 17a profile myself. Chorus are not taking requests. How am I supposed to encourage my neighbours onto 17a?

But I get your point. Chorus should be looking to move people to 17a whenever it doesn't degrade their connection. So far, sadly, they're not

after ringing Snap , they managed to get Chorus around this afternoon to check the wiring and i got good and bad news. The good news was that it wasn't my wiring that was the problem and then the bad news . It seems when the phone lines were put in , Broadband didn't exist , so they put in what he called .4 size lines , hopeless for anything above Adsl , so I am getting the maximum possible speed . If i want more they would have to dig up every connection back to the cabinet to replace the wiring with thicker lines and with fibre coming not a option, so everyone who uses the cabinet will have a problem , as it seems i am the only one to try VDSL so far,  i was the guinea pig.  the other good thing he did was to take 140 Metres of length that wasnt needed so ADSL should be better when i switch back. And that extra 140 metres he took out dropped the line Attenuation from 24 to 19 on Vdsl , so damn that small wiring because i would have got ok speeds.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Yea that's bad news alright, how far away is your fibre?

Still on DLM-2 unfortunately. I have some strange issues on my line though, my SNR is going into the -1. It causes a massive burst of errors.

I saw your stats on a previous post and they were with IPN set to 2 and 8ms of interleaving, maybe you will still be able to get as much as you used to get on adsl2+ when DLM will eventually set you to a better profile and still keep 3 or 4 times more speed (compared to adsl) on the upload side. And if you tweak the SNR to say 9dB, you could even have speeds that are in excess of what adsl2+ can provide on your line... If I was you I will wait to see how far I can push VDSL2 before going back to ADSL2+, of course you will never get the same performance as people with a very low attenuation, but hey these fritz are quite good even on long lines...

Did the drop in attenuation make any difference on the sync speed? Personally given that your download speed is only down about 10% vs ADSL but your upload speed must be up 200-300%, I'd stick with VDSL. Of course if the upload speed isn't important to you then you might as well save a few $ and go back to ADSL...

How come nobody asked how he got rid of 140m of cable? Did they move the house? lol
