Thanks for the replies, guys. Some of the wording seemed to suggest a fibre compatible router was required, hence my question.

When I used the term, router, I didn't mean an ADSL/router, though!

And, by testing, I found you can't use an ADSL modem/router's switch by ignoring the modem as it constantly resets if it can't get an ADSL connection!

But, I am cool with the confirmation that any standard router-only device will be fine.

Cheers.

Usually it is possible to use an ADSL Modem Router as a standalone Router by configuring one of the LAN ports as a WAN port, If your device resets its self every time it fails to connect then it is either a faulty device or that is supposed to be a feature specific to that brand/product.

Just to clarify the only device you should be required to provide yourself for the connection is a standalone Router and what ever you wish inside your home network.

Also depending on the connection you request you may want to take into consideration the WAN to LAN routing speeds your Router is capable of as some cheaper ones will max out at under the 100Mbps speeds that are available.

PaulZA: thanks guys, it seems clearer now. Just how much are the "Standard install fees" I was reading on a post, that they basically have to dig your whole property up to lay the fibre optic cabling for your house. Is that subsidized or funded or anyway? Because the contractors fees could easily be over $5k alone. Not many people, except the extremely wealthy people could afford that. Not many people will take up UFB if the install fee is through the roof!

Take a look at my comment at the beginning of this thread regarding install fees.
In addition, the three LFCs who do charge for extra distance will have published their per metre rates for overage.
From memory, they are typically <$30 per metre. So an extra 20m across your front lawn is likely to be less than $600. I recommend you check the respective LFC websites for their published pricing and look up the overage charges. Or just call the local LFC and ask. Which area are you in ?
