As pointed out above - its much the same as getting gas installed in your street.
Either you stump up to connect to the mains in the street or you wont get it.
This is much the same as building a house and not digging a trench to connect to the current phone system.

As I understand it, Chorus (and other companies that are doing the rollout) are installing in the streets and the demarcation point will be in the street.

What does need to be considered is that, it will cost you money for you to connect your house to fibre.
If you had your phone line run within a PVC pipe (dont know how long this has been the practice) its apparently theoretically possible to 'blow' the fibre wires down (provided there are no obstructions etc). Dont know what that would cost or whether a cottage industry will spring up to do this.

The other potential solution is to have a handover point (in your street or nearest cabinet) that connects the existing copper to fibre. This is of course not ideal, but would/should still improve your connection rather a lot. I understand that this is being considered and evaluated.

Well I was thinking about Orcon but god damn I cant stand that purple thing they have going on, I was going to then look at TCL but the whole Voda / TCL thing leaves me nervous whos buying who ???, for my next choice I was going to look at Slingshot but since I'm such a hater of anything freeware and Asterisk that ruled them out right from the start ... So I think I will go with those awesome guys and girls at WxC because I just want to set and forget as I'm a bit flakey on this technology stuff so best to have a team that can do that for me.... when you want the best go with the best is what I say

Please no one take offence here I'm just having a laugh

Why? They're not comparable products.

Asterisk is a PBX. Broadworks is a fully featured softswitch. They are two completely different products that are suited for completely different things.

Yup, just look at where the first roll outs are ... nice flat and modern suburbs. These have been hand picked because they are cheap compared to a lot of locations. eg. wellington is going to be a extremely difficult and costly build unless they opt for a lot of above ground network.

Not sure about never getting completed (posible i guess), but i think the s**t is going to hit the fan when they roll the network down the street and then no one connects because they dont want to pay an extra lead in cost.

Everyone is currently riding the rainbow to the dream factory but their aint any parachute for when they wake up.

In napier they picked a suburb called Hospital Hill - it is very much like Mt Victoria in wellington.
It wouldnt have been the easiest to do, but they did it surprisingly fast.
I suspect it was chosen because there is a hospital in the area - though the hospital has been closed down for 10 years.

Last time the guys at Target put up a webcam in their house they found the tradesman 'came' early ;)

Luckily most of the telco guys do some really good work, and if you talk to them they put in that little bit more effort to do a neat job.
