chevrolux: If I was in the situation of buying a house and relied on the internet, I would sure as hell make sure I could get the connection before I even contemplated putting an offer on a place.

This is why you make it a closing condition of the final purchase! If it turns out Chorus don't have any free DSLAM ports for you, oop, the deal is off..

pretty sure they won't know until they actualy try to provision the connection, which won't happen until you try to move in, which won't happen until the deal has gone unconditional.

not really. I worked at telecom call centre and a lot of times people called to see if BB was available at a property they were looking to buy. We would then run some tests and send for further tests to get a clear picture. The ports are allocated straight away if available or put on a waiting list if not available. These tests would normally be done in a couple of hours.

I personally too checked internet availability before I bought a house.

well we actually ended up setting up the wireless link today instead.

Used two of these:
http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=p&p=NETTPL5210&name=TP-Link-TL-WA5210G-54M-2.4GHz-High-Power-Wireless-

one at each end, and the neighbour was more than willing to help out.  turns out he was on one of the old slingshot plans 256/128, so have organized to change to full speed unlimited.  Im assuming they send a tech out to the cabinet to uncap the speed?  I hope there's no risk of losing the port.

We're also going to be setting up a WISP as there's a heap of other people on the waiting list, plus we're on the side of a hill with a view over most of the Kaipara.  Apparently a guy from chorus was working at the top of the road a few weeks ago, and 7 people stopped and asked him when they were getting broadband.

The Chorus prequalification tool is what can be used to see if there is a waiting list. Every ISP should have access to this.
