Hi,

Thanks!!!...thoese are much better than having to wait on less than 1Mbps upload...even 2-3 on the VDSL2 would have about halved or third-ed (?) the time it took on my last one to YouTube... (about 3hrs)....

FYI there are Kiwis who upload alot to their own YouTube channels...one bloke I know has two channels and reported a few weeks ago he had just passed 29 million views in total,  from memory.... yeah I am sure that is what he said...just checked again and its just one of them...18,536 subscribers...30,061,852 (!!!!!!!!) views as of 12:31am 10/10/2012... "Xjet"

nakedmolerat: Ok, uploaded video to YouTube just for this thread! Wired connection, same file, same account, same computer, using software Netgear Genie (to measure the upload speed)

Upload speed alternating between 44.6Mbps - 44.8Mbps

So if you are uploading lots of YouTube videos, it is worth it.

Would be interesting to see a tracert to the particular address the upload was going too, possibly going to a local Google/Youtube CDN/cache.

Should be able to figure out the address with Firebug or HttpFox addons for Firefox or Chrome's dev tools.

Yeah would like to see that too. Quick test shows my uploads going to SYD @ 3-5mbit

Most problems are the result of previous solutions...

Okay guys I did a little testing myself to see what exactly is going here. On my current ADSL2+ Vodafone red network connection, my upload was going to a USA server (IP: 173.194.72.11, not sure if other ISPs cache youtube uploads). So what this means is that although fibre can offer ~50mbps upload, the video is being sent to USA so you will see significant speed drops.

If anyone here with fibre installed could please run some speedtests (speedtest.net) to both LA and New York servers that would be great. Then we can see the practical upload rate for YouTube videos, compared with running a speedtest.net to an Auckland server which isn't practical.

If some people are able to get their YouTube uploads going to Aus, then I'm sure we'll see much better uploads compared with USA.

Cheers,
Aidan

(Orcon UFB 30/10)
In my experience, touted UFB speeds go out the window when our Internet meets the real world. My NZ server speedtests come in at 28/9 but it still takes nearly 7 min to upload a 200MB file to Skydrive.

To the States, my down speeds were variable (with same server) while the up speeds were consistent.

LA 2.27-4.25 dn, 6.4 up
NY (Atlantic Metro) 5.93-22.23 dn, 0.8 up (22.23 is a bit surprising!)
NY (Optimum Online) 1.83-4.45 dn, 4.3 up
San Francisco 1.62-3.44 dn, 5.6 up

I think it illustrates that a lot can happen to electrons between here and there!!

:P

Thank you for sharing this information! It would be interesting to see someone on a 100/50 plan, and see how fast of speeds they can get internationally.

A good idea but its not an upload to YouTube itself...which then reflects exactly what the ISP etc in between handles any specific uploads...Remember I am using a wireless upload restricted to 1Mbps so wanted to see if a fibre connection doing uploads to YouTube (as a practicle example) is able to provide a speed advantage in real life.

Speedtest.net is all well and good but is different from a data stream being uploaded to a site such as YouTube...which can be handled in a different manner by the ISP etc concerned....

I can see from one response here that he was getting a lot faster upload speeds than my restricted one...which proved that fibre in that case was doing what is implied.....
