Kyanar: Pity I can't use it to cover the last 75 metres between the edge of the UFB zone and my house, which isn't even in year 3 despite sitting virtually on the border.

Also, I note that this figure relies on less than 40% uptake of UFB. Are we really setting our targets so low?

low??  that level of uptake in that amount of time would be pretty much world beating.  Only contries where they have literally ripped out copper as FTTH goes in get uptake faster than that (as you would expect when you have no choice but FTTH)

freitasm: Well, currently almost a 100,000 houses can be connected but only a thousand or (citation needed) are.

Cost is the main problem. And the fact that plans don't have large enough cap, international traffic is slow and we don't have decent video content distribution in the country. Everything else (video calls, music streaming, email, browsing, torrents) work perfectly well with existing infrastructure.

What else could prevent adoption?

I can add one more!

In the less than 9 weeks I have been on UFB, the Genius has stopped 10 times with the Phone LED flashing resulting in no phone or Internet. Of course, it could be in this state for hours before I notice.

I have to admit this is the main worry I had when switching. And fibre is supposed to be much more reliable than copper!

How can I advocate people changing?

On Communications Day this morning:

"A group of furious [Australian] telco subcontractors say that drastic cuts to NBN rates are driving them out of business. The subbies claim that the rates for much of the infrastructure work are now so low that they can no longer pay appropriate staff wages and, with fixed-line telco infrastructure now a virtual monopsony, that they simply don't have the option to take their skills elsewhere."

Maybe Chorus should jump on these guys and bring them over to NZ.  Skills should be pretty transferrable and from what I understand we don't have nearly enough people in NZ to install lots of UFB connections right now.

Think it may just be an Orcon thing or the Genius is faulty. If it was just the phone you could port the number to 2talk/WxC but you do need internet for those to work.

According to the news today on stuff, this free 200m install doesn't apply until the end of 2015.

I am also on Orcon UFB but not using the Orcon Genius Router (using my own MikroTik router) and have had one outage in the last 3 months which was a Chorus issue.  My guess is the problem with the Genius Router and not the UFB connection.

I wonder when big players in this market will release their plans on UFB, I have UFB connection laid at by place by Chorus since September, but Telecom (my provider) has not yet contacted me or given me any indication of what will be required to move to UFB (I had registered on their website). So it will still be a wait and watch approach, hopefully next year they will get their act together and come up with something for customers....

Something wrong in that story then (I didn't read it) because the release (which is quoted in the OP) says "The government and Crown Fibre Holdings have reached agreement with UFB partners Chorus, Enable and Northpower that provides an allowance of 200 metres per house until at least the end of 2015."

This is very different from "doesn't apply until the end of 2015".

Both Telecom and Vodafone (pre Vodaclear) have stated their intentions for plans in early 2013. It does mean the smaller players have a jump on them but the mass marketing bltz when the big players get in the act can surely drive the uptake.

Maybe you if you want UFB now, you head to another RSP? Snap & Orcon seem to be mentioned a fair bit for UFB installs

James Bond: Anyone know how long until Enable rolls out fibre to the rest of Christchurch?

+1
I emailed enable several months ago and asked them to give me any indication when they'd do Shirley and they ignored me, it's quite annoying how they aren't providing even indicative plans for the next 3 years of roll out like chorus are, I've even tweeted the council asking them to put a representative on twitter for enable, since they don't seem to have twitter either, still ignored.

this whole not knowing what's happening is probably stressing me out a lot more than it should, it's just really annoying.

is there a rep for enable on here?
