Kyanar, how on earth are you in VDSL area but get a 1.5Mbps sync? That don't make no sense. I'd say you have a line fault.

I know people who are in rural areas syncing higher than that. Line Fault or misread.

Line fault. Unfortunately my former ISP (Orcon) was worse than useless at chasing Chorus to do something about it. Since switching to Compass I've had Chorus techs out close to daily trying to resolve the issue on the back of my ISP constantly nagging them. They've resolved they need to dig up our driveway and completely replace about 50m of "ancient" (their words, not mine) cable.

Chorus has, actually, and I do have a master splitter. They've confirmed it's definitely the line and the last tech out actually said that he had requested that the physical cabling from the pillars be replaced three times over the past year with no traction. (ChorusVan, you listening?)

But I was offered the chance to get VDSL installed as a second connection, perhaps as a backup, to test it.

you still may be able to get vdsl if prequal comes back ok, those green bits of the map are a general hint...

if you do get vdsl, i'd be curious how performance compares to cable, as i found 10 megabit adsl outperforming 15 megabit cable for web browsing with similar pings.

that said, i have also found different computers connected to ethernet with different web browsing performance. (one i5 ssd, one core2quad no ssd)

generally speaking, i found for normal bandwidth traffic is very bursty, so could be overflowing buffers on cable but not dsl or such.

is it faster for general browsing than 15 megabit was? i imagine it's slightly better, but not by a lot.

i think a lot of the slow downs with telstraclear cable come from their caching systems. and if 100 megabit cable is 20% faster than vdsl for web browsing, or 35 megabit vdsl is 20% faster than cable i think it's significant, and note worthy. but i suspect the difference to be more like 10% average over a large variety of sites.

Fast enough to not be worth mentioning as a differentiator when it comes to browsing really. What's important is the speed I have to transfer files to work, be connected to multiple servers, perform online backups for multiple PCs in the house, all at the same time. Pretty much a 24/7 operation in this house.

with performing online backups the first thing that comes to my mind is buffer bloat, which i imagine they'll both suffer from to a noticable degree if uploading at line rate to nz.
