jbard: I think their is another point here as well as the extra costs. The people who are in range of VDSL2 are already close to a cabinet so excluding house wiring will be getting very good ADSL2+ speeds, so the only real world benefit is the faster upload. Really I imagine most people would not be keen to pay $500+ for the extra upload when fibre could be at their door in a few years time.

If you're getting good ADSL2+ download speeds though, you will get even better VDSL2 download speeds. At the end of the day there is still a big difference between 17Mbps and 40Mbps if you're a big household with multiple devices and are heavy consumer of content.

Is there any way to bypass copper phone lines alltogether and connect directly to the cabinet by other means? eg cat6. a customer of mine literally has a cabinet right next to the building he leases and i mean theres about 5metres most between modem and dslam. 23.5mbits line speed. speedtest.net is almost 20

No.

If he is that close the loop will come straight out and he will be in the first CT after the cabinet. Can't get better than that. I have a client like that and he gets 70/15 on the 17a profile. Really impressive I thought.

No, but it wouldn'd make any differnce at all. Those stats are perfect, if they want faster speeds move to VDSL2.

No, all there voice is POTS.

Surely they must have a VOIP solution in the works though otherwise how will they offer voice services for UFB customers in fibre-only subdivisions?

Or, maybe plain old internet is enough initially.

Caps might increase too--- considering you could burn off a months data in an hour or 2 :)

Highly unlikely that Telecom are about to launch a TV service -- firstly we would have caught a whiff of it by now if it's to launch next month, and second I doubt they want to go anywhere near TV after the whole TiVo thing.

So we're talking the Triple Play service I remember reading some years ago now. Fingers crossed that is their intentions via UFB and VDSL2 offerings further down the track.
For now at least VoIP with Telecom would be great to see on offer - or does require a lot of work on their backend to enable VoIP services?

Telecom canned its ambitions as a TV content provider years ago, shutting down the experiment you're remembering. I am sure they realise that if the likes of Netflix were to enter the market here it wouldn't be worth the effort in trying to compete. To be honest, all I want from my ISP is a good solid connection - I will then choose the services I want to use over it myself.

Via the NEAX's using their VoIP line card solution which has been in place for a number of years. There are already plenty of Telecom customers who are cabinetised using the ISAM-V cards in the ISAM when the copper MPF's to the cabinets where considered U/S.

It seems TNZ are getting close to rolling out their UFB offer to the areas with fibre now installed.
I had a phone offer from the to be included in the pre-launch trial (which kind of sounded interesting but the caller wasn't prepared to email the details and I don't have the time/inclination to 'chat' on the phone ... pity, but will wait to see the details in the official launch I guess!

Hopefully they release a retail VDSL2 plan at the same time for the large amount of customers benefiting from cabinetisation but not in the UFB plan until way way later.

Chorus (and before that Telecom Wholesale) have had a wholesale VDSL2 service (WVS) available since late 2010.... still no retail VDSL plan from Telecom.

I now have Fibre in my street - yeah !

I want to connect - and would prefer Telecom.
This is based on the demarcation / problem resolution issues I faced with Orcon / Chorus / Telecom at the last house... (many years of declining ADSL (and ADSL2+) quality / speed and never fixed.. )
I moved house, went back to Telecom (their win back team do a superb job !) and like their service.
Their pricing isnt as low as the others, and they still don't offer a Fibre plan..

so is March when do we think it will be available ? or will TNZ announce in March and I could still be waiting in April.. or May..

I see Orcon has good priced service , but again those in the neighborhood who I know have connected to Fibre with Orcon have also had demarcation issues with Chorus / Orcon..

Any advice welcome..
