What speeds does your suburb have now? If it's a rural area is it part of the RBI footprint, remembering that in many parts of the country wireless RBI is the chosen method of delivery for broadband, not copper.

I live in Oratia with speeds of 2.36 average, there is a cabinet less then 2 kilometer down the road but we are connected to an exchange 14 KM away for some reason but I bet this is all futile and will result in no speed boosts.

The only Oratia I can find in NZ is in West Auckland. That area was cabinetised in 2011 and also has a number iof RBI cabinets coming in the next few years to further out other areas of West Auckland and will have wireless RBI coverage for the remaining areas.

Have you actually looked at the RBI coverage maps to see what solution you may be being provided? Since I don't know your address I can't do the work for you.

While your voice services may come from an exchange 14km away your DSL won't come from that as DSL can't work over 14km. Once again without knowing your address I can only speculate that you're either

a) on an existing whisper cabinet and have poor wiring which is delivering your poor speeds

b) on a Conkin from the cabinet which may

                                                            a) be upgraded as part of the RBI project

                                                            b) be replaced by RBI wireless

Unfortunately at the end of the day there will always be pockets that don't get either. There are plenty of options for communities to build out their own infrastructure, but the biggest issue is getting backhaul into many areas.

DonGould: The cabinets are not $200k, Chorus reported they're averaging $100k installed with the fibre feed.

Figues I was quited directly from Chorus during the cabinetisation rollout was between $150k and $200k per cabinet.

We are pretty damn close to the cabinets but a tech said we are connected to the 14km away exchange, if you can help me further I can send you my address in a PM.

DSL has a max range of 6KM there is no way you are connected 14KM from an exchange. There could be several KM of copper between you and the cabinet though.

Based upon the other thread it is going to be in an RBI zone.

I know most of you will disagree but I'm still of the firm opinion that rural users should pay more for their service. Using 15x the cap of the the average NZ internet users in a rural location and expecting to pay the same as an urban user is IMHO an unrealistic view.

This really is a political issue.

There was some debate on the Internet NZ PAG list this week about landing a AU cable south of Auckland.

An issue that comes up is where we want population. If we don't provide cost comparable comms in more areas then people will all just collect where they can communicate at the lowest price.

That agenda suits some and not others.

I do agree that it's not the role of private enterprise to develop the nation though. Governments role is to invest in infrastructure that serves the community, though governments also get captured by interest groups with their own agenda.

Technology is a leveler though and we've given you all the information you need to get better access to data at a comparable price to what people pay anywhere in the country, so good luck!

Thanks I talked to a Chorus tech and he told me I am not connected to the whisper cabinet, as a result when I am free on Saturday I will give vodafone a call to see whats up and get connected to it.

Maybe take longer or have lower speed etc but the largest Company in NZ is Fonterra who is owned by 11000 farmers most pretty rural. If we are going to take billions in tax dollars from them and use some to build UFB then I think they deserve a little better than dial up.

Why, if you live away from the city centers you dont expect to be on a buss route, have town water or get your rubbish collected as frequently. Its part of being rural.

Sure we all want faster better bigger , and I would probably be singing your tune if it were me, however I know that is an unrealistic expectation. Can you explain what it is that you're having issues with? Perhaps if you used an isp which offered a higher quality service your 2.3mbps would be enough?

Just throwing that out there for discussion

I want to say that people in rural areas should pay more when there are extra costs of delivery.
However i dont believe they should be ripped off.

No 2 Mbps is not acceptable if there is a whisper cabinet near me the chorus tech that came over was just as confused as me when he saw my house was connected to an exchange further up instead of the cabinet 1-2 KM away and I bet you would be just as pissed off as me if you knew you were near a cabinet but not connected to iy . BTW I wouldn't call Oratia full blown Rural.
