How is your network configured now? Do you have a garage facing the street?

Don't discount wireless as most people need that for the increasing number of portable devices we have. You won't be wanting to wander around plugging little devices into the wall.

You can still locate the ONT where you would later put a distribution centre if you decide to do that later. Personally, I wouldn't rush into the full cabling at this stage. That can be done at anytime if you decide it is desirable.

As an example of a low cost setup, my fibre comes in from the street via my road facing garage. The Chorus guys routed the cable to a full height under-floor area of the house and installed the ONT there. From the ONT I ran an ethernet cable through the wall to the supplied modem/router in my rumpus room. This room is where my main computers are and where my old ADSL modem/router was sited.

There is an ethernet cable from the router going upstairs through the floor to the TV corner. That cable has a wireless AP on it giving upstairs wireless coverage and cable outlets.

I gave a lot of thought as to where the ONT should be sited but, at the end of the day, it has to be connected with an ethernet cable and this can be any length up to 100 metres.

gmball: I am in a similar boat, with UFB install scheduled for next week.

A fairly modern property, brick and tile, built in 2004, but no internal star wiring box or central point. Possibly something located in the internal roof area.

My phone jackpoints only accept small plugs on the inside, or Network cable plugs, and there are 8 visible pins, can I assume that my cabling would be Cat5 or newer?

Any idea's on the cost of adding a central star wiring box and terminating all cabling to one location, based on a single level 4 bedroom home/concrete floor?
Any approx $ figures based on past experience, would we be talking hundred's or thousands?

I can definitely see benefits in this prior to installing UFB, as it would enable me to have the Chorus ONT located in the same box.
It would enable me to make all phone points live for high speed UFB rather than relying on wireless.

I had cat5e cable retro fitted to existing house as had a small extension and the electrician was there anyway.
Electrician can run cables through roof space and costs the cable (cheap), the connectors on wall and mostly his time.
Ask an electrician how much to have a central hub somewhere and network cables running from there. If by TV for the ONT then run a network cable from there to a central point and distribute maybe using a switch where it is nice and hidden rather than behind the TV (maybe the office)
I have mine in the garage in a cabinet but can be anywhere such as the office in which case run the fibre to the office maybe and ONT there and then use that as a hub and put network connectors in good places and attach an old wireless router as an access point attached to one of these network connectors.
Pretty sure the electrician was hundreds and not thousands for my place.
I got a connector behind TV, in kitchen, in family room, office and master and other bedroom.
Connect main computer to family connector via old wireless router as access point and works fine for wireless devices and my computer attached to internet via cable so hopefully faster.
Also the ONT connector can send phone back to the main phone connector on side of the house and thus attach the fibre phone signal to original BT boxes around the house. I am with World Exchange so they have VOIP but not sure about Telecom

For a data cabler to rewire your house you are looking 60-80 dollars an hour. Cat 6 is about $1/meter. PDL rj45 modules are about $15 each and pdl face plates are about $10.
Then a cabinet (or flush panel) might cost around $200 once you have bought all the patch panels and things needed to fit it off.

So add up the outlets that you want and you will get a cost for parts. Then just have a think about how hard it would be to run cables.

To give you an idea, I wired up an old state house that was going to be an office. It was 24 outlets but they were in groups of 4 so really quick to run. good access under the floor and in the ceiling. Only took 8 hours.
Then when I look at wiring my place I have duals and an rg6 in all rooms and then a quad to the tv. Cable to the ceiling for an access point and underground stuff out to the garage. All up, 20 outlets. My floor is low and the outlets were spread out. It was hard work. Took me about 3 weekend days to complete. I would say close to 20 hours - would hate to pay that bill lol.

You're good! My own network at home is still half finished and probably will stay that way for a while yet.

Oh well not going to happen anytime soon. Apparently they have dig a trench up the drive way - I'm pretty sure that the neighbours won't consent - because it's a rather pristine driveway at the momet. Not sure what the legalities are though as we do have legal ROW for access and for services. Would depend on whether UFB counts as a service.

ETA - no apparently they are just worried about the tenants next door getting their cars out - they don't need to go to the owners.

ETA current speed test on telecom ADSL
