coffeebaron: Patch for Mac day too? If this is customer I'm thinking of, then he has a couple of Macs. He was also suffering from very poor DSL, so he has jumped I think about 10 fold in speed.

Coffeebaron did this customers install yesterday.

He had extremely poor ADSL, downloading at around 1megabit from what he told me. I don't know why but once Coffeebaron had finished his job and VDSL got switched his download went from 1meg to 20meg and his upload from less than 1meg to 10meg.

Concerning you don't understand why a master filter will improve a customers line.

This is a perfect example of why you should make all your customers have the filter installed.

so really the jump in data usage (and speed) is more likley to be from having a master filter installed rather than actualy getting VDSL.

Where do you get this idea from?

We strongly recommend Master Splitters for all DSL customers (ADSL & VDSL) except in circumstances where they may be running Naked ADSL/VDSL and there is only one jackpoint going back to the demarc (quite common for a lot of our small / medium businesses).

CoffeeBaron would be able to comment on the performance of before and after on this particular customers connection.

probably because you said this:

"He had extremely poor ADSL, downloading at around 1megabit from what he told me. I don't know why"

Given that the customer can get VDSL he must also be in an area that gets at least 10Mbps on ADSL.

So if he was only getting 1Mbps before, then when a master filter gets installed this jumps up, then that seems reasonably conclusive evidence that the reason his speeds were so bad before was due to the building wiring interfering with the signal.

So he could have gotten most of the speed increase by simply getting a master filter and not speding the extra to get VDSL

Fair comment, I had forgotten to ask CoffeeBaron what the sync rates were before the Master Splitter. Yip, this would of had a seizable impact.

I still blame VDSL for the upload increase though :)

in increase on ~150mb? for 12GB down, that could be for the most part, an increase in acks, speedtesting etc.. not exactly a substantial increase.

been on vdsl for coming up on half a month now, and my usage is pretty well matched with what i was getting on adsl. i admit, i havent pushed my line tooo much, and with the excess data i have, its due for a sizeable pushing..

benefit comes with that upload speed for me, youtube uploads fly no more hours on end with horrid jitter and pings.

vdsl simply allows you to pull all you want at much faster rates, if you already had a decent downstream, you're not likely to change all too much..

Perhaps if chorus were not so generous about the no fault found but still not charging then more people would get the filters installed after horror stories of call out costs for internal wiring faults?

It used to be mandatory, back in the day. These days, $199?? Hmmm, maybe will try it without and see how it goes, thanks.

I second Peter, make it mandatory, absolutely.

I believe it's going to be mandatory for all VDSL installs soon (if it's not already!)
