You would be wrong then, Briefing today indicates that from March onwards they will be slowing replacing DSLAM's in exchanges in the 5 Main areas, these exchangesstillto be decided as they are looking fro feedback on this, Current existing DSLAM's will be replaced

And if you don't live in one of the five main centres then tough. From the relevent story in today's DomPost:

It will upgrade its exchanges outside the five main centres to ADSL2+ once that equipment reaches the "end of its economic life".

I'm afraid thats the commercial reality as much as we would like ADSL2 now for every one it won't fly for a number of reasons same way as Cellphones , Sky TV etc you can apply this to you the fast food chains, Clothing Stores etc, you launch in the Major population areas and let the demand fund the growth, I'm afraid rural New Zealand will always suffer from this

1. Telecom have a RTI return on Investment, ADSL has not beeen deployed for that long they have Hardware they require to get a return on so ADSL will be pushed out to the outlying regions.
2. Of course they are going to Target the Large Population areas first, this is i'm afraid just a commercial reality of the business, Wait till LLU where do you think all the Carriers that are going to put in their own DSLAM's will go first major exchanges areas so they get a return on investment.
3. The copper has to be a bit closer to the average house 2k, this applies to most of the Major exchange areas higher density housing ie Larger Cities

Exactly. I conclude they're rolling at ADSL2+ solely to preempt competition and not because they're going to make any money out of it - even in the main centres. My original comment meant that I didn't think Telecom would cover the costs of ripping out old equipment early but of course I hadn't considered the other factors . It's not the first time Telecom has started providing services it knows will lose it money for competitive reasons. (To clarify, I'm not saying Telecom won't make money out of ADSL2+ per se, but rather pulling out old DSLAMs before they're written down will. Though redeploying them will help.)

I would guess in a lot of situations, ADSL2+ DSLAMs will be simply added to existing DSLAM kit rather than ripping the old ones out and replacing with new.

For a lot of us our current service is fine, okok I know not everyone feels that way, but if the backhauls were improved and my 6M/128 connect rate could achieve least 50% throughput then I would be happy for sometime. As I see it other than improved uplink speeds most of us will gain little benefit from ADSL2+. From my observation even 128k uplink is still adequate to support 3-4Mb/s downlink acks, and not having any servers that make use of the extra uplink is of little value to me. I think a majority of users are in a similar boat.

there are 10 to 20 ADSL subsribers in my area.

they better plan on getting more backhaul in my area before upgrading to ADSL2 !

Even if all you 10 to 20 subscribers were using ADSL2, there would be no speed difference to any of you, unless there is some user based QoS in place. Right now, I would suggest to people that if your isp offered you an ADSL2 plan at extra cost, dont pay the extra money, untill your ADSL1 plan is working at proper speed.

I'm curious - how do you know what the back haul is and how many other subscribers area in your area ?

I did an experiment first and I was told by Telecom staff later.

If you work at Telecom and don't believe me I'll give you my phone number.

AFAIK It's a PCM/copper (4 or 8 pair?) backhaul from an Alcatel DSLAM remote-unit (aka conklin), there are POTS line cards in the same cabinet but no MUX over fibre :-\

I don't work for TCNZ

I dunno what occurs in roadside cabinets but I assumed each exchange dslam has a 155Mbit OC3 backhaul, how many connections one can get per dslam I have no idea

I'm almost scared to call TCNZ and ask how far from an exchange I am but I get a consistant 2.7Mbit how much I should get I don't know

OC-3 is found in American networks, here they use an STM and mostly I've seen Nokia equipment used for this. ATM on Wikipedia is a good geeky read.
Considering where I live I'm actually pretty happy to have broadband at all

but it needs to improve still

I think its going to take the rest of the year before its out everywhere. Main centers are first on the list so Christchurch should be one of the early ones.

Even though its ADSL2+, Many people here would agree that there is no benefit other than a slight increase in distance you can be from the exchange / cabinet. Telecom dont have the backbone to be able to handle any increase in speed so you may get very rare bursts of adsl2 speeds but most of the time, it will be as it is now.
