InstallerUFB: PIR/C is just a cross connect cabinet with a 75 pair copper feed off the PIR/H cab (calculated distance between is 4.7km ) PIR/H is also only a Cross Connecton Cabinet (calculated to be 500m from PIR exch)

So nothing to get excited about I assume?

It means that you are 0.5 + 4.7 + 2.6 = 7.8km from the exchange so your chance of getting reliable ADSL is diddly squat -- the same situation I am in.

Maybe the wireless service at 18km LOS from Waikato Hospital is a possibility, but if not, then Vodafone's RBI wireless will be your best bet, teamed up with an ISP of your choice.

thegeneral: Yes, acquired from Google Maps. I could possibly get a photo of it myself later today if it would help with anything? Located here next to pole: -37.952873,175.192386

Edit: This is as much angle as I can get off of Google Maps,

That Geo location doesn't show up a location for a new RBI cabinet, and yes that does look like a cross cabinet and not a Conklin or ASAM or similar rural cabinet.

If you're with Telecom message me your address and I can see what the story is, or email me pl at telecom.co.nz and I can have a look.

And that area looks to be exchange fed from PIR Pirongia.

Have just PM'd you PL, also the box has PIR-C printed on it. I had a look at it and i can tell there is not much to it, it was quite wobbly on its base also.

I understand now, I wasn't sure if I had to be within 5km of exchange or cabinet, but it is both. Thanks for clearing that up Grant. Not a nice situation to be in at all! And 18km does seem quite a distance ... lol

Well I think that's almost an end to this thread, I'll await a response from PL but it seems likely he will tell me what has been said here. Thanks for the help guys, I've learnt some new things today.

i had 2 megabit'ish dsl at ~ 7.5km from exchange.  it went down to 1 megabit or something when cabinet went in.  it was kind of unstable after being cabnetised, but mostly seemed slow prior.

that said, wasn't rural, so no electric fences etc

it randomly bounced around between adsl1 / adsl2+ both were about the same when forcing.  i think adsl2+ was slightly better?  adsl2 doesn't do long line lengths, adsl2+ does.

ADSL is never going to be available to all of the population as it's simply impossible to cover everybody due to the costs. That's where the wireless RBI comes in.

normal wireless should work if there's a provider around too and should be more affordable, although i think some of the wireless providers are charging more than they need to atm because of lack of competition / availability of other solutions..

I would be looking for someone closer to the exchange and in the line of sight, offer to pay their bill and setup a wifi link with ubiquiti m5's or something

grant_k: If you are only able to get 1-2Mbit/sec speeds with ADSL, then the reliability will most likely be crap.  The local Chorus tech. said that we might get 1Mbps if we were lucky and was saying how much cheaper it would be than wireless.  Having suffered with unreliable ADSL services before, I am not interested in going down this route, as 7km is well outside the design range of ADSL, so we would be asking for trouble.

Looking at your area on Vodafone's RBI coverage map, their 3G wireless service is already available in your area.  Before you write it off as too expensive, check out this plan from Ultimate with 20GB and then $1.50 per GB overage:

http://www.ultimatebroadband.co.nz/rbi-max-enhanced-plans.html

This is the plan I'm using with a VoIP phone service, and it works perfectly.  Fraser (aka CoffeeBaron) does installations in the Waikato, so he could most likely hook you up with this service if you are interested.

Flick me a PM / email if you would like some more info on this option.

Cheers
Fraser

You need to be around a max of 5km from the Broadband equipment.  This is always in the Exchange and sometimes in the cabinet (some of the older cabinets - the much bigger ones not these - and all the new ones Whisper cabinets).

The only way to check for any upgrades to the Chorus Copper & Fibre network is here (so to confirm what your being told, put your address in)...
