lol no i mean like if its as cheap as everyone here says it is (international bandwidth) then why are they not buying enough?

Because consumers are all about price it seems when it comes to internet and that has to cover all the really expensive stuff like support centers for people who don't know how to plug stuff in, the backhaul cost, the line access cost....

Seriously dude "force them to buy more" LOL. If you are so cheap and go with Slingshot then complain about speed maybe the government should force you to not be so cheap and go with a provider with lots of international capacity as an alternative "force"?

the thing is, its not my decision since the account isn't in my name, so i don't appreciate being called cheap thank you very much.

It does not matter who it is that is cheap but the fact still remains that you get what you pay for. If you want a better connection, hamish225, then contribute some of your own cash and upgrade your connection. Don't expect a peanuts connection to perform like a premium one.

Back to OT though... If the SxC capacity is fine then why are we seeing multiple reports of terrible routing to Australia lately? Given that major CDNs and Google servers are located there should ISPs like Vodafone not be making damn sure their routes function well to Australia? I wonder if this new cable is a way to get out of having to pay a bunch for SxC connectivity in the future. :)

on that note why have there been domestic issues recently? domestic should be cheap, and there should be plenty of capacity there too.

telstraclear and telecom have both had domestic issues, and then on top of that there was euba congestion from telecom moving more connections onto euba. which the bandwidth demand for should have been predictable.

Can you back that up with facts, as as it stands now the prices have been tumbling year on year. Need to stop reading articles in the Herald etc. The SCCN is actually very good, and resilient if protected paths have been bought.

Most problems come down to some ISPs simply not purchasing enough capacity. And before someone says the price is expensive on the global market... look where we are, and consider how little int bandwidth costs attribute to monthly broadband spends. Then look at the Chorus xDSL port prices...... sure you still want to regulate it?

They have done it in a pacific island - i forget which pretty sure when i was reading the story, the local minister for info technology was quoted as saying somethng along the lines of a landing station in their country so i am pretty sure it would be Fiji.

Basically the minister announced that they have a landing station in their country with huge masses of capacity and their local isp's get ripped off for the amount they are charged per megabit when compared to the price in NZ / AUS for the same cable.
They changed the local laws and started regulating the price that international operators could sell internet access to their local ISP's and halved the cost per megabit.
