sbiddle:

I still think it's so funny that so pany people have issues with TCL cables strung from power poles yet the damn ugly trolley bus wires that span the city seem to be fine in people's minds because they are "green.. Despite the fact that we're burning coal to generate the electricity to run the buses..

OT - Ah yes being superficially green. Trolley buses don't belch gases so they must be good. What about the loss of electricity through the overhead cable resistance and connectors? It seems that people also forget high school Physics. The first law of Thermodynamics - Energy can not be made from nothing and it can not be made to disappear to no where but it can be changed into something else.

Burning coal heats water which turns to steam which drives a turbine which creates electricity which powers the Trolley bus.

The trick you see is to get rid of the coal power plants and replace them with geo-thermal and wind.

Anyway, you're not seriously saying that a diesel engine in a bus is "cleaner" than the average NZ power station (given that around 60% of our electricity comes from hydro or other non-polluting sources), are you?
