Frontliner: What gear does chorus need to put in place for VDSL to be available? How likely would this gear be put in place before a fibre upgrade is done?

It's just a line card upgrade to one of the Alcatel 7302's they have in the cabinets. Basically if you can get ADSL2+ there is a pretty good chance VDSL will be available off the equipment already or will be very shortly. Being close enough to actually get it is another thing.

Where about to you live? By and large the cabinet roll out is next to complete I believe, so that may well be the case

Telecoms VDSL prices are only +$10 on their ADSL across the cap range, so I'd like to think then that their ADSL prices will be coming down soon anyway. Unrealistic perhaps?

I ordered VDSL 2 weeks ago, modem was sent but then got a call from Telecom saying chorus said I was being put on a wait list for VDSL as there are not enough VDSL ports in my cabinet. For me to get connected what does the chorus tech need to do? Install a new line card? I've been told it could also be as simple as a port swap with someone else.

Nate001: what does the chorus tech need to do? Install a new line card? I've been told it could also be as simple as a port swap with someone else.

Line Card - Yes if slot available to swap out cards
Port Swap - Yes if there are spare/ unused port/s on other cards to swap you and another none VDSL customer around

In both cases there has to be a physical site visit

Back in the days when users became a 'waiter' for DSL it used to take on average something like 180 days. I haven't seen the numbers for years now, but obviously if you live in a small community where no one ever moves then it could take longer. It's one of those how long is a piece of string answers.

Without knowing the full details this is mere speculation but the standard Chorus SLA for work such as a line card installation is 14 days. This is assuming of course that the issue is a simple card swap or installation.

Reading above re: there not being enough VDSL ports in a particular cabinet. I have a question: did Chorus design these cabinets with a ratio of available xDSL slots vs. the number of premises that the cabinet is there to serve?

EG, it would be unrealistic to expect that 100% of houses are ever going to want xDSL, so they might build the cabinet with enough slots to cover say 80% of the premises.

Is this how it works?

I hope it's a short period like that. The chorus guys are all over Nelson laying fibre. Hopefully there are a few spare techs left to get around to me.

Hi, there are two sizes of cabinets depending on the coverage area, regardless in either situation there is spare capacity to physically put more ISAMs in as there was room left for sub loop unbundling which no one wants to take up as its not cost effective. I think what is more the issue in this case is that there are two types of cards (well I suspect more than that now), some that only do ADSL1/2+ and others that do both ADSL1/2+ and VDSL2, if there is not enough of the latter then some cards are going to have to be moved about.

That is how the entire network is designed. Right up to the NEAX. There are not enough EN's for every house in NZ to have a phone. Just like there aren't enough ports for every house hold to have a DSL connection.
