I can actually stream 720p on my parents rural connection on a good day ;) - they were on a port waiter for about 4mo too.

Gah, what is it with people moving to 'lifestyle blocks' then expecting everyone else to cater for their demands - talk about a warped sense of entitlement! honestly, when I moved into where I am I was looking at properties where along with the necessities such as closeness to rail and bus service I also checked to see what mobile coverage was like, whether Vodafone cable was in the area and whether VDSL is viable. Here I am after a few months of house hunting with a VDSL connection rocking at 40Mbps down and 10Mbps up without a care in the world all because I did my home work.

When a friend was looking for a house to one that didn't have any phone connection at all (it was a renter for its previous owners), they got the sellers to get one connected before settlement. Their lawyer said it wasnt the first he had to go thru that for either as it is just so important.

I like that approach, I think it is very smart. Get your broadband connected before settlement and make it one of the conditions for the contract to be unconditional.

This is happening more and more in hawkes bay where sellers in lifestyle blocks ring us up and say "Hey we are trying to sell our house but the new tennants have put a condition on the sale that broadband must be avaliable"

It annoys me when i meet people who think "the government is rolling out fibre" when they are living in the middle of nowhere.

60 years ago, if you wanted a telephone line, you got together with your neighbour and sent your husbands down to the the engineers yard at the post office to pick up a spool of cable. Then they went to buy a bunch of telegraph poles and started putting them in.

These days there are companies willing to set up broadband services to a neighbourhood for a fraction of the cost of DSL.

freitasm: people should realise broadband access is as important as getting a house close to school (if you have kids) or to a bus stop (if you commute).

I would rate it as more important than both of those things regardless

People should not only check that internet is available but get estimates of the line speed just to make sure its not to fringe.

There are still plenty of port waiters in central Auckland. Not sure if it has decreased now, but it was 100+ at one stage. :|

Looking at Google maps, even the close end of that street to PN is not would I would expect to get all services on.

You have seriously got to wonder if the reporter in this story actually did any checking on this story,

A bit of googling shows exactly where they are located, so I would guess that any fixed line ADSL is not gonna be that flash either,

but the sense of entitlement in this article is abounding,

"they have to hold their computers in the direction of a solitary tower in the distance to get a connection barely quicker than dial-up speed."

And they are installing the fixed hi gain aerial in this good location with a wireless AP when?

That would be on those tiny lifestyle blocks (they appear to be on a two acre block)

These are $1/2 million plus lifestyle properties, that are deliberately squirreled away off long driveways and up little valleys because they don't want neighbours within 20 metres. I cannot see why they are not prepared to spend a very small % of the property value to improve their connectivity.

At least in their situation there is a wireless provider covering them

Why is it that people choose to move out of the city to these lifestyle blocks? To get away from it all?

If that is the case, then I'm afraid that you can't have all the services that there are in a city such as reticulated water & sewerage, and your BB may be poor to non-existant. Let the buyer beware.

Total annual rates on that listing is only $1,418.86 so that leaves heaps to go towards a decent internet connection when you compare it to what people in the city pay - 3 times that for me and only going to go up thanks to lenny boy
